Default Rear popping/clunking on decel

What causes this? I finally noticed it and know it's normal but am just curious what causes this? Does it going 20 or slower in neutral decelerating.

Eh, somehow I doubt that. Torsens always do it, I just want to know WHY?

Does it make loud popping sound randomly? When you jack up the rear end do the tires more much more when you hold only one end? Could be bad.

No, no random loud pops, just a slight box of marbles sound when coming to a slow stop if I turn the wheel side to side. Rear end sounds fine with the tires in the air, when spun 1 moves opposite the other, not much slack in there at all either. Pretty sure its normal.

Really? Because I have checked mine several times since I bought it. The backlash has increased a bunch. The amount one wheel will slip compared to the other has increased a lot. Very evident play between ring and pinnion when taking off from a dead stop. I get loud popping in parking lots and backing up.

Sounds like your good because I KNOW my rear end is going and you don't sound like your having my issues.

After a couple 4000 rpm launches on MT yesterday it started making a lot more noises and howling.

BTW I only have 25 or so hard launches from 4000 to 5000 on MT and the rear end is doing this.

My car only has 13K and it clunks on decel too. It did it even before I went to the track, or put on DR's. I found if you leave it in gear as long as you can while coming to a stop it will not do it at all. Try it and let me know.

Correct, in-gear no clunky. My car is all highway miles and never beat on or taken to a strip. I doubt it has an issue. We took the diff cover off to do wheel-bearings (SLIGHT! noise, fixed it) and the Torsen looked MINT.

Mine does this too, but lately it has been getting worse to the point where it clunks once from the 2-1 downshift and upshifts from 1-2 and sometimes 2-3. It also gives one solid clunk when getting back on the gas after taking a turn. I always thought it was the torsen, but maybe it's the excessive backlash? It's got 84K on it but it has been doing this easily for 20-30K with no grenading yet. Does yours do this kinda stuff too, or just the decel marbles?

Just decel marbles. Seems the common curse of the Torsen T2.

in torsens the paddle will bang on the 8mm retainer pin giving you that sound, no big deal. Next time you service the rear, remove the pin. clean it with carb cleaner and wrap a pice of electrical tape around the portion where the pin goes thru the paddle to dampen the noise

in auburns a "popping" sound is worn spider gear, much different sound than the torsen, if you get that sound your rears about to die unless you put new spiders in it
