Default Rebuilt trans Problems

I have a 01 ram air A4, stock except for air lid and cutout. Im on my second rebuild in under 10k. The first time it messed up, it started out by tagging the rev limiter on the 1-2 shift and then one day second was gone... I had it rebuilt under warranty and then, 1-2k later i had the same problems and boom no second gear. They said it was a bad converter that caused it the second time. I know for sure they replaced the converter, second gear band, seals and modulaters. Now the new problem....Is very wierd. At first no matter what punch I went from or wether I shifted it manual or leave it in drive it wouldnt shift from 2-3 with out letting out at wot. I drove it for a while and let it "Re-learn" and now it will shift in D but not manualy from a roll....I talked to a gm tech and he said it sounds like maybe the fuel filter is clogged up and making the computer command the shift funny. I changed that today and it was clogged badly, I couldnt even blow through it. I also reset the computer and now its not shifting in D again. It also feels like it has convter lock up issues on the highway when I adj. the cruise it kinda slips just a bit. BTW I never had these 2-3 shift problems untill they rebuilt it. Any ideas????Think the 3-4 clutches are done??? Other than at WOT it shifts fine and has no codes.

I would have to say that the problem lies in the build. If it was operating properly prior to the intial failure and has not been correct since, I do not know how it could not be related to the build.

I would have to say there is a crossleak or there is excessive clearance in the 3/4 clutches off the top of my head.

If you want to kick it around, give me a call tomorrow at the shop.

Before you go out and get another rebuild, make sure you're not throwing any codes with a scantool that an autozone scanner WON'T pick up. I had a similiar problem after a rebuild and come to find out I had a P0502 code: Vehicle speed sensor low input. This $20 part cause my car not to shift into 3rd at WOT. Replaced it and no problems thus far. I also had my tuner turn off codes P0751 and P0757. Those codes will also make your tranny go crazy.

I would agree its allways best to spend a little extra time in diagnosis. I have seen mnay instances where simple non trans related issues gave the appearance of a transmission problem. I know I have had several instances there used to be a chrysler dealer above a shop I was at , People would go there and they would tell them they needed a trans and more than a few times they would come to me and I would place scanner on take a ride and sometimes get a code and others just notice a speed sensor input or TPS being out of range change the parts and was fixed right up. So its worth the time to study it a bit .

Thanks for all the replies! I think I figured it out 2day after changing the fuel filter (was clogged badly) and reseting the computer I drove it a ways and let it relearn a little bit it shifted perfect!! Since I was assuming the fluid was good I checked it today (which should have been the first thing i checked) and it was 1-2 quarts low!!!!! Im surprised it even shifted, thats what I get for assuming. BTW thanks for your time today Gilbert, I appreciated it.

I'm having the same problem between 3rd and 4th gear. At WOT my car bounces off of the rev limiter. The reason I had it rebuilt is because the 3rd and 4th clutch pack seized up. So they upgraded the internals of the trans. they also installed a shift kit which I have heard it raises the line pressure and that is why it isn't shifting properly......any truth to that? will re calibrating the shift points fix this problem......

Raising line pressure only applies more holding power to the clutches and firms up the shifts when the right accumulator springs are matched with the hole sizes in the separater plate. Reprogramming your computer will calibrate your shiftpoints to the correct rpm. If the 3-4 clutchpack is loose, this could cause your delay in shifting under load.

If you drove the trans low on fluid and it was slipping. It won't be long before you'll be pulling it out and having it gone through.

They guy that did the rebuild insists that it needs to be recalibrated and that the rebuild is good...........

Your sig states that you have a 9 clutch tranny. I am going to suppose that this refers to the 3/4 clutches. if so, then I would guess that this is the Alto Red Eagle commercial pack. I do not run those because we found them to be inferior to the Borg Warner High Energy clutches.

The Alto clutches are a paper material and the BW's are a woven / fiber material. This is mportant to that clutch pack because it sees high loads at high rpm's. I would not doubt that you 3/4 clutches are showing signs of failure at this point. And that is why your transmission is exhibiting symptoms.

I have seen this issue time and time again, there are some modifications that MUST be made to the hydraulic circuits that control the 3/4 clutch pack... regardless of which clutches you run. If these are not made, the unit will not live long.

you'd be talking about proper drian modifications for the clutch exhuast ? and sufficient holding pressure and volume changes.
