Starting My 5.3 Swap....Computer Questions?
Hey guys, long time lurker (LSx envy).
Recently I bought a 1969 C10 SWB Fleetside as another project. I wanted something dependable and something that wouldn't kill my mpg and still have a decent amount HP/TQ. After weighing cost (among other things) I decided on swapping in a 5.3 Vortec engine.
So I bought a complete setup (engine, computer, harness, MAF, gas pedal, etc) from a rolled low mileage 2004 Burb. I already have the engine mounting handled, so that's out of the way. I will end up running stock '98 F-Body manifolds since they clear the frame without mods.
I did not buy a transmission since I have 28" tall tires and 3.08 rear gears. That means the TH350c tranny I have will be bolted to the 5.3.
I did several searches and found that the stock computer will need to be tweaked to work for me (I figured). I have read that the un-used inputs can be 'edited' off the computer.
-VATS
-VSS
-Rear O2 sensors (no cats)
-Gas Tank Pressure (emissions)
Okay, lay it on me. What else do I need? Any help is thanked in advance.
Thanks guys!!

If your concerned about gas mileage I would swap the trans for a 4l60e. You can pick one up at a local junkyard for a couple hundred bucks and it will pay for itself with the gas you will save. As Stu said, what about fuel pump and regulator? Do some searching on here to see what your options are and if you have any questions about them we would be more than happy to answer.

if it has an egr you may want to deleate that too (not nes. but can clean up engine compartment and one less thing to go wrong down the road).
other than what you stated, a friend and i just did a 5.3 and that was all we deleated and it runs great and last week it even passe emissions (its a98 sanoma).

I would def look into a 700r4 or 4l60e if you're going to swap the motor too
why settle for 18mpg when you can have 24+ and more first and second gear grunt?
not to mention how much better it will cruise the highway, less noise if nothing else, after having a 700 in my chevelle I'd never go back to a 3 speed

you can get a vats bypass module and the rest of the emissons you will have to have them delleted by someone with tunning software, the vss dont worry about it just dont hook it up and if you go to a 4l60e it will be there when you need it. hope this helps, good luck with the swap

Why BUY a module if it can be tuned out and he needs tuning anyway....? C'mon lets keep it simple to help him with his first swap. You can do an awful lot thru tuning and save yourself from serious headache's if you have someone that knows what you've got and what you need.
Good luck with it Assassin!

I am having Wait4Me Performance tune and mod the PCM, including removing the VATS (among other things). They are also modifying my factory harness to remove all the unnecessary plugs, wires, connections, etc. Plus adding the speedo and tach output, and a fuel pump reply. Should really clean up the engine compartment.
