Thanks Otting Auto Parts
I was looking for a while for a reputable place to get a LS1/T56 set. I happened to stumble upon Otting Auto Parts (http://www.ottingautoparts.com/) on craigslist and eBay. I called the place and found that they were only 2 hours away. I was glad to see that they usually have a selection of at least 2~3 different LS1 sometimes LS2 and T56 sets usually with less than 75,000 miles every week. This was evidence to me that they do this regularly. When I was finally ready to buy one, Lee had a few to choose from. I drove out to his yard in Lindale, GA to see first-hand where my engine was coming from.
While out there, I found that Lee always gets whole cars and pulls out the engine/tranny as a unit complete with all the wiring and accessories; nothing missing. He had probably 30+ F-bodies in his yard that he has pulled from, so this is nothing new to him. He knows what he's doing and knows what buyers expect from him as a F-body/LS1 owner/enthusiast himself. I saw a set he had ready to be shipped out and he had it wrapped and strapped very well (it looked like a cocoon with all the shrinkwrap he used); I was quite impressed. They are a complete salvage yard with all the tools, lifts, shop dogs, and first hand knowledge necessary to get these sets out properly without any damage. Lee was very knowledgeable about the LS1's and it was apparent that this was his hobby and that he was very picky about the quality of the engines he sells.
I was able to see and hear the engine running (and driving) from the donor car (01 Ram-Air w/ 74K miles) before he had it pulled out which took only 45 minutes since they have done this numerous times. I watched the whole time and it looked very routine. He had the engine sprayed down for me and had it placed on a pallet to be placed into my Yukon (which fit perfectly). They used a forklift to set it in there and I used a cherry picker to get it out. Lee caters to a lot of custom rods and lately to a lot of 240SX owners (like myself). Overall it was a great experience and if you are in the region looking for a set, I recommend driving out there and getting one (long-sleeved shirts and pants are recommended unless you like mosquito bites). If you are looking to get one shipped, then you really have nothing to worry about. These guys will take care of you.
Thanks Lee!
