Difference between TR224 and COMP224?

Difference between TR224 and COMP224?
I asked this question in my other thread but decided to make a new thread for it to get some more educated responses. I have been looking at cams and have decided to go with a 224/224 - 114. I see the both COMP and Thunder Racing make this size cam, except the COMP has .002" more lift, but I also heard the new TR224 is around .563" as well. The COMP is also about $50 cheaper. Anyone know the difference between the two? Possible things like advance and ramp? Thanks for any help!

Our 224 has a quicker ramp speed than the Comp XE lobed (is that a word?) 224. It will make more power. Also every one our cams comes with a Cam Pro Plus print out of the measured specs of your cam and not just what the cam should be based on the lobe design.

Which Comp?
There is the 224 XE with ~.566 lift. The ramps are slightly less agressive than the TR-224.
There is also the 224 XE-R with .581 lift. The ramps are aggresive. The TR-224 is about as aggresive but with less lift. The extra lift on the XE-R gives it a slight advantage in area under the curve. The 224 XE-R has ~2 percent more area. The XE-R is also harder on the valve springs.
TR has some new cams coming soon...so they might have another 224 before long.

Comp makes TR's Cams. I would always trust Comp over a small shop. They have been doing it for years and they probably have some of the best lobes on the market. More importantly, you need to make sure the cam is designed properly. Everything has to be set up to maximize valve events. Email 93PONY for more info.

Thunder Racing's camshafts are custom ground with our own propritary lobes and they are not the same as anything you will get from Comp directly. You can give Geoff a call at our shop if you would like more info on the details of why our cams perform the way they do. (Our toll-free number is 877-516-7223.) Yes, we are a smaller place than Comp Cams. However, we also are a paying advertiser of this board and they are not. We also spend countless hours on R&D for the particular engines that this board is dedicated to. Comp Cams is an excellent vendor (one of our best) but you can ask their top guys who they call when they want one of their new LS1 parts tested...I'll bet you'll be suprised which "small shop" they tell you.

Thunder All the Way!! I've been buying/participating since 1998, and Thunder Racing consistently gets better over the years, many other shops are gone. Extremely good customer service, that fact alone makes me pay the extra bit to TR over bargain prices. IMHO.
Did I mention I LOVE my TR224 on a 112?

I am pretty fond of TR and the TR 224/224 myself.
My vote is for the TR. Less lift, faster ramps. Awesome power.

Re: Difference between TR224 and COMP224?
Call Comp and see who makes their cams. They use a Comp XE high lift lobe. As for TR being a better product than Comp, remember who actually makes the cams. There is nothing better about a TR cam. If you think they have a more aggressive ramp think again. None of their cams have a more aggressive ramp rate than the XE-R Comp lobe. My cam is only a 220 duration but .581 lift.

Re: Difference between TR224 and COMP224?
Actually, I thought the TR224 had a less aggressive ramp, more like a Comp XE and that was one of the things I liked; didn't want a spring killing XE-R. But who knows what it actually is, they won't talk about it. If I had known this was going to be such a big issue, I would have put the cam on my lathe and used a degree wheel and dial indicator to find out just what it is; but I don't want to know bad enough to rip it out my engine to do that!

Re: Difference between TR224 and COMP224?
Cal, thats the reason I went with the comp .563 lift. My friends had there .581 lift cam and ony dynoed 399 in his cam only M6 02.
i doubt you would see a difference in either on the track. I just saved a 100bucks with ls1speeds cam package though..
again, both are great cams have fun pickin one
