Camaro and Firebird: Why Can't I Shift Out of First?
Is your Camaro or Firebird getting stuck in the first gear? This guide will help you get to the bottom of the issue.
This article applies to the Camaro or Firebird (1990-2002).
There are various things that can go wrong with your Camaro or Firebird's transmission that would cause it to get stuck in first gear. A transmission shop would charge you a large amount just to inspect it. In this guide, we will go over the main causes of such issue, which will assist you in diagnosing and perhaps even fixing the issue. If your car is stuck in first gear, stop driving and start reading.
Materials Needed
- Socket
- Drain pan
- Funnel
- Jack and jack stands
Step 1 – Check transmission's dipstick
Your fluid could be old or low.
Anytime you have a problem with your transmission, you should always check your transmission's dipstick for two things: the fluid level, and the fluid's condition. Your transmission's fluid should be pink, so if you're seeing brown colored fluid, then you need to replace your tranny fluid. Before checking the tranny fluid, however, drive your car around for 10 to 15 minutes. The fluid will measure more accurately when it's warm. If the fluid appears to be in good condition but low, top it off and then check around the transmission's oil pan for any leaks.
If the fluid is in good shape and level, proceed to Step 2.
Step 2 – Check transmission's filter
It could be clogged.
The transmission's filter is located inside the transmission's oil pan. To get to it, you will have to drop the whole pan, which is easier than it sounds. For this process, you will need to elevate the vehicle evenly, which means you will need four jack stands. Once you raise the car and secure it, place the drain pan under the front of the transmission's oil pan. Loosen the front bolts on the oil pan, then let it drain. When it's mostly drained in your pan, remove the rear bolts to drop the pan completely. Take this opportunity to clean the pan well, then pull the filter out and replace it. Place the pan back in place, and torque the bolts to nine feet-pounds. Put the oil back in the transmission through the dipstick using a funnel.
If the filter is in a good condition, proceed to Step 3.
Step 3 – Check the transmission's wiring
It could be worn, cracked, or corroded.
All the wires that are connected to your transmission are important; if one or more stops sending proper electrical signals, your car could very much get stuck in the first gear. Go under the vehicle, use your flashlight, and inspect every wire going into the transmission. Follow the wires to make sure they have no cracks or wears. If you find a bad wire, make sure to replace it with a similar one.
