Rules

Marcus Östlid has a thing for American cars, and for going fast—but following rules? Not so much. His racing enterprise, Team Insane Racing (that's their livery on the 'Vette), runs a '80s Chevy Monte Carlo, complete with wheelie bars and a 491 c.i. big block, in the illegal street racing scene around Stockholm, Sweden. When he's not evading the strict traffic laws in Scandinavia, his shop Extreme Sportscars (we get the feeling he named these in the '90s while drinking Mountain Dew Code Red and watching the X Games) makes good on its name by building toys like the 2007 Corvette Z06 time attack missile you see here.

Appearances

Marcus is a practical sort when it comes to Team Insane, and after campaigning his C5 Corvette for seven years, refining it each year, he ended up with a pretty potent Chevy 383 c.i. LSX engine, boosted by a cogged belt-driven ProCharger centrifugal supercharger. Not one to throw the baby out with the bathwater, when the C5 chassis had outlived its usefulness and Marcus was in search of an upgrade, he purchased this Z06 as a roller.

Old Faithful

Before we get to that Johnny-come-lately chassis, let's take a look at Marcus' old reliable LSX mill. The bottom end is built around a forged-steel LSX 3.905-inch bore block, with an Eagle 4.0-inch stroker crank, Eagle 6.125-inch H-beam connecting rods, and forged JE pistons. Aluminum AFR CNC-machined 210cc cylinder heads, a custom Extreme Sportcars cam, GM Performance hydraulic lifters, a FAST 102 mm intake manifold, a Nick Williams 102mm throttle body, and 1,000cc T1 Dynamics injectors all play their parts in keeping the LSX well-fed. A front intercooler coupled with a methanol/water injection system helps cool the charge from the Procharger F2 supercharger, and twin TiAL 50mm blow-off valves (one before the intercooler and one after) keep pressures under control. Burnt gasses exit the engine via 2-inch American Racing headers emptying into a single-pipe side-exit exhaust Marcus built himself with an eye towards cutting weight.

Hooking Up

As one might imagine, 1,200 horses are bound to be a handful on a road course, and since no one has re-invented the wheel the best solutions are still rubber and wing. Rubber, in this case, means 280-section front, and 310-section rear, Hankook racing slicks on 18x12-inch OZ Alleggerita HLTs for the track. On the street (!) Marcus runs 19x12-inch OZ Superleggeras wearing 305-section Toyo Proxes R888 tires at all four corners. AP Racing 6-piston calipers in the front and 4-piston in the rear pull the Corvette down from speeds generated by all those ponies.

Carbon and More Carbon

About that wing, it's a sizable APR carbon fiber unit, and it sits above the Corvette's Loma GT2 widebody kit, also made of carbon fiber. The kit's fenders flare in an old-school sports car way that's both attractive and functional, 80mm further out than the stock Z06's fenders (and 120mm wider than a C6's factory fenders). In a nice change from the plague of pop-riveted-on flare kits commonly seen in the performance world these days, the Loma kit is made to bolt up perfectly in place of the C6's original panels. Rounding out the 'Vette's aero is a front splitter that aids in keeping the nose planted.

Smoke

Since Marcus still drives the Z06 on the street, much of the stock interior remains, though the passenger seat is history while the driver's seat has been replaced by a Sparco Racing seat. Marcus fabricated the Chromoly roll cage that protects him when he pilots the C6, which boasts 1140 lb-ft of torque to go along with that 1,200 hp we keep mentioning—not bad considering the weight of the car, including the cage, comes in at 3086 lbs. It may be a purpose-built track car, but it's still a Corvette with a blowing V8, and sometimes that means roasting the tires—which is just what Marcus does in this video. We can't wait to see what morsel of America Team Insane Racing helps itself to next.
