1. Years Manufactured

Chevrolet introduced their SSR, which stands for Super Sport Roadster, in 2003. The Chevy SSR was only in production for four years, as it ended its small legacy in 2006.

2. Engines

For the first two years, Chevy used the GM Vortec 5300 engine. The V-8 5.3-liter engine produced 300 horsepower, and it went from 0 to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds. In 2005, Chevy put the LS2 engine in their SSR, which developed 390 horsepower, the same engine found in the C6 Corvette. As for the last year of its production, the SSR featured the LS2 engine, but with some modifications done to it, boosting approximately 395 horsepower.

3. Transmission

In 2005, the Chevy SSR offered the manual transmission for the first time. The six-speed Tremec transmission assisted in the development of the 390 horsepower. In 2006, the SSR offered both the automatic and manual transmission; choosing the manual transmission gave you five extra horsepower, making your LS2 develop 400 horsepower.

4. Sales

In 2004, Chevy offered the SSR for $42,000; unfortunately, less than 9,000 vehicles were sold. The SSR continued to have poor sales, and in 2006, GM announced that it is the end of the SSR, and they sold roughly 24,112 vehicles that year.

6. Design

The Chevy SSR design was based on the SuperSport Roadster concept car, which was introduced at the 2000 Detroit Auto Show. The SSR used the long wheelbase from the Chevy TrailBlazer, and it featured a retro removable hardtop. The design was influenced from the 1940s Chevy trucks.

7. Pace Car

As an attempt to introduce the Chevy SSR to the world, GM used it as the pace car for the 2003 Indianapolis 500. The 87th Indianapolis 500 took place on Sunday, May 25th, 2003.
