Jump-starting a car is easy, but you need to follow some safety precautions to make sure you do not harm yourself or the vehicle. It is a good idea to always keep a set of jumper cables with you in case your battery happens to die. Jump-starting a car is essentially using another vehicle's battery to transfer energy to your car and allow your car to start. Follow these directions below to find out how.

Material Needed

  • Jumper cables

Step 1 – Connect jumper cables

First, connect one positive end of the jumper cables to the running car's battery. Make sure that the positive and negative terminals are not touching at either end. Connect the other positive cable end to the dead battery. Then, connect a negative end to the running car's battery and connect the other negative end to the dead battery or a metal ground. Try to start the car and see if it will turnover. If it doesn't turnover right away, then wait a minute or two and try again.

Step 2 – Remove cables

Remove the jumper cables in the opposite of the order they were put on. Make sure no positive and negative terminals touch at any point. That's it! You have jump started your car.
