Tires, Wheels, Studs

Tires must be checked for any and all signs of physical defects. They must also be found to be in optimum condition with the correct level of pressure before they can be approved for use on roads. A minimum of 1/16th tread depth is also required. Hub centric and lug centric spacers are allowed; however, they cannot be doubled. Finally, tread engagement on the lug cannot exceed the diameter of the actual lug.

Hardtop Cover

While there are a number of requirements for a hardtop, it's important to note the following safety items: 5-point roll bar, 5-point harness with a crotch strap, Snell 2000 or more current helmet, fire jacket, bolted in battery (via an approved retention device), aftermarket axles, transmission blanket, an approved balancer and flywheel/flexplate, as well as long studs with open lugs.

Helmet Requirements

According to the newest NHRA rule book, your helmet must display a Snell 2000 or newer certification sticker. The sticker should be stamped inside the helmet or sewn directly into the retention strap to verify the authenticity of the helmet for racing purposes.

Common Questions

Is a safety harness required when using a roll bar in a Camaro or Firebird?

Yes! Stock safety belts alone simply do not meet the requirements set forth by the National Hot Rod Association for safe driving.

What are the requirements for a "low miles, manual, hardtop" Camaro or Firebird?

The long is very long. However, it's important to note you will need a six point cage harness and driveshaft safety loop.

Is a fire suit needed for the NHRA "super gas" class?

You will need a double-layer jacket (SFI 3.2A/5), pants (SFI 3.2A/5) and gloves (SFI 3.3/1).
