This article applies to the Chevrolet Camaro (2010-2015).

Your Camaro's charging system is responsible for, among other things, starting the engine and storing battery charge to power accessories. Because the components of the charging system are interlinked, an issue with one component can affect others. For example, if your alternator is drawing too much charge, it can drain the battery, causing it to go flat and not charge. With a dead battery, you're going nowhere. As the battery ages, or goes flat repeatedly, the cells inside can wear out, causing a permanently flat battery. If your battery is dead beyond jumping, it's time to replace it. Fortunately for us all, it's a pretty easy job, requiring minimal tools.

Materials Needed

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Battery charger (optional)
  • Multimeter (optional)

Step 1 – Remove spare tire to access battery

While the battery is located under the hood in most cars that are produced today, the modern Camaro's battery is located in the trunk of the car. Pop the trunk and lift the carpet up and out. Remove the spare tire cover by twisting the cap counterclockwise and then lifting up on the cover. Pull the spare tire out and you'll see the battery.

It's a good idea to test the battery before replacing it to see if the battery is actually bad, if it just needs charging, or if the problem is coming from somewhere else. You can test the battery using a multimeter. If the battery reads 12.6 volts or higher, the battery is fully charged. If it shows less than 12.6 volts, it needs to be charged before proceeding. If you charge the battery and it isn't holding that charge, it might need to be replaced. Battery chargers will often tell you if there is a bad cell in the battery, or you can take it to an auto parts store for free charging and testing.

Step 2 – Remove the battery

Use an adjustable wrench to remove the nut on the negative (black) battery terminal and cable, then remove the positive battery terminal nut and cable. Be careful not to let the two leads touch each other. Lift the battery out of the car.

Step 3 – Install the new battery

Set the new battery in place, then reinstall the negative and positive battery terminals as well as nuts. Start the car and let it run for a minute to make sure everything is operating as it should. Replace the spare tire, spare tire cover, and nut. Set the carpet back in the trunk and you're ready to roll once again!
