Uncommon Sighting

In the land down under, the HSV Maloo R8 LSA is a familiar sight, but not so much in the United States. Recently, a stunning 2016 R8 LSA has surfaced at a Mecum auction in the US, set to go under the hammer at their Chattanooga sales event from October 13-14, with expectations of fetching a price tag well beyond $100,000. This particular Maloo R8 LSA represents one of the final iterations of the beloved Australian ute, and its rarity has sent enthusiasts buzzing with excitement.

A Powerful Beast from Down Under

The Maloo R8 LSA is no ordinary utility vehicle. Under its hood roars a 6.2-liter supercharged LSA V8 engine, pumping out an impressive 550 horsepower and 509 lb-ft of torque, all channeled to the rear wheels through an automatic transmission. It's a performance beast, reminiscent of Britney Spears' electrifying stage presence.

The Forbidden Import

Importing HSV models like the Maloo into the United States isn't a straightforward process due to the stringent 25-year rule. However, this particular Maloo found its way to American soil through the innovative work of Left Hand Utes, a Denver-based company. Left Hand Utes sidesteps the import restriction by importing Holden vehicles and then meticulously rebuilding them, incorporating U.S.-spec components from Pontiac GTO, G8, and Chevy Caprice, including the powertrain, fuel tank, and headlights. The result is a legally compliant left-hand drive Maloo R8 LSA that defies the odds.

Impeccable Condition

While specific information about this Maloo R8 LSA remains somewhat scarce, what we do know is intriguing. The vehicle boasts a modest 19,988 miles on the odometer, and from the glimpses of the interior, it appears to be in excellent condition. Painted in a captivating Sting Red and featuring striking red leather inserts on the seats, the Maloo maintains its iconic allure.

Enhanced Performance and a Lone Owner

Mecum Auctions highlights that this Maloo R8 LSA has seen just one owner, and under their care, the 6.2-liter V8 received upgrades, including a cold air intake, new headers, an upgraded pulley, and dyno tuning, elevating the power output to an impressive 625 horsepower. Much like Britney Spears, this Maloo has undergone a transformation, enhancing its appeal and desirability on the market.
