1. 1981 Trans Am SE

Considered by many to be the most spectacularly styled car of the 1980s, the gold version of the 1981 Firebird Trans Am Special Edition also pushed the era's performance envelope by offering a 301 cubic inch turbocharged V8 with 200 horsepower at a time when most V8s could only boast about 150 horsepower.

2. 1974 Trans Am SD-455

By the beginning of the so-called "Malaise Era" (i.e., 1973) most automakers had given up on performance and begun substituting styling flourishes like velour interiors and opera windows to attract buyers. Not GM's Tip of the Spear! The 1974 Firebird Trans Am Super Duty 455 rocked the industry with its 290 horsepower, 395 lb-ft torque ratings, providing a driving thrill that no other domestic offering could come close to.

3. 1969 Trans Am Ram-Air iii

The Holy Grail for many vintage Firebird collectors is the 1969 Trans Am Ram Air iii. Only eight (!) were made that year, and the Ram Air iii was the highest performance engine available in the convertible, second in horsepower only to the coupe's optional Ram Air iv. With its unsurpassed styling, the 69 TA Vert persists to this day as one of the all-time great muscle cars.

4. 1977 Trans Am SE "Bandit"

Leave it to Pontiac to combine style and performance in a package so unique that it was chosen to be the star of an iconic film and TV series, Smokey and the Bandit. The black 1977 and later Trans Am Special Editions picked up the name "Bandit" and are among the all-time favorite vintage Firebirds sought after today.

5. 1999 Trans Am 30th Anniversary

Can a 1999 vehicle be considered "vintage?" When it represents the last generation of an automotive titan like the Firebird, we are compelled to include it in the category. The 30th Anniversary edition of the Trans Am was the last — and perhaps the most beautiful — of the 5th gen Firebirds, whose production was sadly ended in 2002.
