C8.R in Action

Taking a quick one-race getaway from the IMSA GT Le Mans class competition, the Corvette Racing Team brought the C8.R to Belgium to compete in an FIA-sanctioned GTE class endurance race. The blazing yellow C8.R, which normally competes with the number 3 under IMSA regulations, displayed the number 63 in this race earlier this month.

Modified for FIA Regulations

The car also received several small modifications to be able to qualify for the GTE class under the FIA's regulations. The Six Hours of Spa endurance race was a great showing for the Corvette team and an appropriate test of their abilities as they prepare for the legendary 24-hour race at Le Mans.

Legendary Drivers

Behind the wheels of the C8.R were seasoned drivers Antonio Garcia and Oliver Gavin. Gavin was a principal driver for the grey C8.R before he retired from full-time competition at the end of last season. He's been serving as a reserve driver this season, on-call for opportunities like this. Garcia has an active role as a principal driver for the number 3 C8.R.

Spa

For those unfamiliar with Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, it's one of the most amazing race tracks on the entire planet and lauded by many world-class racing drivers as their favorite. It features everything from long straights, high-speed corners, low-speed chicanes, up and downhill sections, and gorgeous views of eastern Belgium greenery as far as the eyes can see.

Clean Race and Respectable Result

The Corvette team qualified in fifth place ahead of the race, with Antonio Garcia behind the wheel. The race started and finished with the Spaniard in the Corvette, with Gavin taking the seat during the middle stints of the race. The C8.R finished a respectable 4th place within the GTE Pro class.

Looking Forward

This experience will serve the Corvette team well as they look to put their best foot forward at Le Mans in August. The team will be back under IMSA regulation in a few weeks, with the next race being IMSA's Chevrolet Sports Car Classic race at Belle Isle Park, Michigan, which takes place on June 12th.
