Naturally Aspirated

As the automotive industry collectively moves towards electrification in the very near future, the idea of new high-displacement, naturally aspirated, V8-powered American sports cars becomes increasingly unlikely. Upcoming high-performance machines mostly feature forced induction, partial, electrification, or both. The unrivaled engineering minds at General Motors seemingly didn't get that memo, though, as the company has unveiled the newest Corvette Z06, powered by a screaming N/A V8.

High-Revving 5.5-Liter V8

In what is, little by little, becoming a dystopian future for many of us automotive enthusiasts, it's amazing to see Chevy flexing its muscles with the most powerful naturally-aspirated production motor of all time. The powerhouse propelling the new 2023 Corvette Z06 is a 5.5-liter flat-plane-crank V8 that achieves its highest power rating at an unheard-of 8,400 RPM. The mid-engine rocket's redline comes at 8,600 RPM.

Unique Sound

The high output is thanks in no small part to the new lightweight and simplified construction of the powertrain. Specifically, the flat-plane-crank setup allows for more efficient delivery of force, while raising the RPM cap. This configuration famously creates a unique sound, as well. GM engineers reportedly worked for a whole two years to perfect the Z06's exhaust note.

Wider Stance

As has been the case with Z06 variants of the previous few generations of the Corvette, the C8 Z06 gets a wider, more muscular stance than the standard Stingray model. A healthy 3.6 inches of width has been added, which contributes to more mechanical grip, and therefore, improved handling. The wider rear tires also provide a larger contact surface with the ground to enhance grip during acceleration.

Aero

The added width also allows for larger side air inlets, which play a crucial role in getting air into the engine bay. Speaking of air, a number of aerodynamic upgrades are also available with the Z06, including an aggressive front splitter with integrated canards, side skirts, and a choice of a rear spoiler or a carbon fiber rear wing.

No Manual

As most of us could probably have guessed by now, there will not be a manual transmission available with the Z06. The vehicle's architecture simply doesn't allow for it. But we're sure all who drive the gnarly new Corvette will be happy with the performance of the fast-shifting 8-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

The Looks

The styling of the Z06 has surprisingly been met with mixed reviews. The front end of the new Corvette has some resemblance to the brand's muscle car, the Camaro. Though in our eyes, it gives the Z06 an appropriately sporty and aggressive look. Plus, when it comes to the aesthetics, it's the wide-body proportions that do most of the talking. And as is the case with pretty much any generation of the Corvette, getting behind the wheel will make anyone forget their complaints about the styling.

One For the Ages

In truth, this is a car this particular writer has been waiting a long time for. And the fact that GM saw fit to keep things simple with a high-revving new V8 adds to the excitement surrounding the mighty Z06. How do you feel about the newest Corvette reveal?
