LS Powered AMC Rambler Straight From SEMA

The 2017 SEMA show was chock full of crazy rides. Perhaps nothing crazier than this 1963 AMC Rambler widebody with LS power.

1. Uncommon Build

Let's face it - you don't exactly see a ton of AMC Ramblers running around these days. And they certainly aren't typical starting points for builds. Which kinda makes them a perfect starting point for a build. And it's also why Suzy Bauter and her husband decided to build this 1963 Rambler into something special enough to take the stage at the 2017 SEMA show. Even better, they built the stunning ride in the comfort of their own garage. And the result was good enough to grab the attention of big-time car mag Car & Driver.

2. The 'Flare Witch' Project

The first thing you'll undoubtedly notice is the Rambler's new, wider stance. Indeed, steel widebody fenders lend the car an aggressive look and space for huge wheels and tires. And it's also the motivation behind the car's name - the Flare Witch Project. But the fenders aren't the only thing that gives this Rambler a wider track. Underneath, you'll find a 1st gen Camaro subframe up front and a 5th gen Camaro unit out back. All of which gives the 100-inch wheelbase Rambler an impressive 80-inch track width.

3. Upgraded Motivation

Of course, leaving the stock AMC six-cylinder under the hood of this super wide Rambler wouldn't have done it much justice. So instead, the wife and husband duo sourced a 5.3-liter LS for proper motivation. We're guessing that the car scoots along pretty nicely with that new powerplant. And we're also guessing it's easier to find parts for an LS than the original flat-six.

4. Not Off-The-Shelf

After all, it's not like any parts for an AMC Rambler are exactly easy to find. In fact, Bauter claims that she managed to find the last AMC Rambler windshield in the U.S. just before the car had to hit the road to make it to SEMA after the original wound up broken. And we're glad she did because the car obviously left a lasting impression on everyone that laid eyes upon it.

5. Built for a Purpose

The crazy Rambler wasn't just built for show, either. Bauter and her husband plan to take the car out and enjoy it on track days and various autocross events. So it would seem that the massive 18x11 inch wheels and 315-section tires are going to be good for more than just dropping jaws, after all. Though we're sure this thing will turn plenty of heads at the local circuits, too.
