Top 10 Most Powerful Chevy Trucks Ever Made!
From small block gasers to diesels and a few other surprises, we've ranked Chevy’s truck muscle according to horsepower.
Intro
Over the years, Chevrolet has put some big engines under the hood of their pickup trucks. Some of these engines are legendary, such as the big block 454 found in the Chevrolet 454 SS pickup. Others have faded from history, such as the massive 8.1L Vortec 8100 that could be found in Chevy trucks from the early 2000’s. But here’s the thing. As much as we love a good big block V8, time and technology move on. And when you look at Chevy pickup trucks based purely on horsepower figures, the older engines just can’t compete with the modern units. That's why on our list of the most powerful Chevy trucks ever made, the oldest dates back to just 2005, and most of the list is comprised of trucks available in 2026.
Some would argue that torque is a more important engine metric for a pickup truck, and we won’t fight you on that. We may do another list in the future that ranks trucks by their torque output. But horsepower is a figure that everyone is familiar with, so we went with that for now. The following list is ranked from the least to the most powerful. Let’s get started.
10. 2014 – 2026 Silverado 1500 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 – 355 Horsepower
To even crack the top ten on this list, you need to pack 355 horsepower. And the Silverado does just that, thanks to the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 that has been under the hood for over a decade now. This L83 V8 replaced the Vortec line. It features direct injection, cylinder deactivation, and continuously variable valve timing. It is a workhorse in GM’s fleet, powering various truck and SUV models.
9. 2005 – 2006 Chevrolet SSR LS2 V8 – 390 Horsepower
This is the oldest engine on the list, but that just proves how amazing the LS2 is. The Chevy SSR was a flamboyant mash-up of pickup and roadster. When it first went on sale in 2003, it came with a 300-horsepower 5.3L V8. That wasn’t enough muscle to back up the bold looks. So, Chevy dropped the LS2 from the Corvette in the SSR, and horsepower shot up to 390 while the 0 to 60 mph times dropped. You can say what you want about the SSR, but the LS2 is a peach.
8. 2020 – 2026 Silverado 2500HD/3500HD 6.6L Gas V8 – 401 Horsepower
The base engine in the current Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD lineup is a 6.6L gasser known as the L8T. It combines 401 horsepower with 464 pound-feet of torque. The engine uses a cast iron block and cast aluminum heads. This engine replaced the 6.0L V8 that had been the standard engine previously and was good for about 352 horsepower, so the 6.6L is a noticeable step up.
7. 2010 – 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 6.2L Vortec V8 – 403 Horsepower
Here we have a good ‘ole Vortec on the list. The L92 was a reliable workhorse for GM, but after a couple of years, it was upgraded and eventually became the L9H, which is the engine that can be found in the Silverado. In this application, it was good for a healthy 403 horsepower, just edging out the L8T to claim the 7th spot on our list. This engine is sometimes referred to as the truck version of the LS3 V8. That's high praise, as the LS3 is highly respected to this day.
6. 2014 – 2026 Silverado 1500 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 – 420 Horsepower
If you want to upgrade the gas V8 in your Silverado 1500, the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 is your choice. Like the 5.3L L83, the 6.2L L86 features direct injection, cylinder deactivation, and continuously variable valve timing. Of course, it has more displacement, so power increases to 420 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. This has been a steady engine partner for the Silverado for a dozen years now.
5. 2017 – 2023 Silverado 2500HD/3500HD 6.6L Duramax – 445 Horsepower
Now we're getting into some serious numbers, so naturally, that means we are looking at diesel engines. Diesel engines are, of course, known for their torque, and this one doesn’t disappoint with 910 pound-feet of it. But that is also combined with a healthy 445 horsepower. The L5P V8 Duramax Turbo Diesel was first seen in the Silverado HD trucks in 2017.
4. 2024 – 2026 Silverado 2500HD/3500HD 6.6L Duramax– 470 Horsepower
What can possibly top the L5P? How about an updated L5P? In 2024, the L5P was revised to be more powerful and more efficient. The stats were now 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. Ninety percent of that peak torque is available from 1,550 rpm through 2,850 rpm. When you need to tow and haul the big stuff, this is the engine you need.
3. 2026 Silverado EV WT – 510 Horsepower
This is where we may lose a few of you, but the facts are the facts. The Silverado EVs make more horsepower than any other Chevy trucks. That doesn’t mean they are the best trucks or can tow more than anything else, but when just looking at horsepower figures, the EVs can’t be beat. The base Silverado EV WT has a dual motor setup and a 205-kWh battery pack rated at an impressive 492 miles of range. This setup also generates 510 horsepower and 490 pound-feet of torque (up to 580 pound-feet in Tow/Haul Mode).
2. 2026 Silverado EV Trail Boss With Max Range – 725 Horsepower
Now we are getting into just crazy horsepower numbers. The new-for-2026 Silverado EV Trail Boss with the Max Range battery pack can generate a staggering 725 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque when in Wide Open Watts mode. That mode is available in short bursts for maximum passing power. But even in regular mode, the EV Trail Boss is still good for 625 horsepower. It might not sound like a big block, but this is a powerful setup.
1. 2026 Silverado EV LT With Max Range – 760 Horsepower
Here it is, the most powerful Chevy pickup truck of all time. The Silverado EV LT with Max Range battery pack. With Wide Open Watts mode this truck makes 760 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque. This is combined with an EPA range of 493 miles. Yes, the range will drop if you are towing. But this truck can rip to 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds. So, if you love horsepower and acceleration, the Silverado EV LT with Max Range battery is the truck for you.
