Default Wyotech question... not exactly the same as all the others

Ok, I read all the post about Wyotech and how its really only good for working in a dealership if youre looking for a job. Well im not exactly looking for a job. Im looking to start a performance shop. I am just not the type of person to go get a job for someone else.

What my question is: Do you guys feel like Wyotech teaches you enough to go and open your own performance shop? Not so much porting heads and making cams. I just want to have a better knowledge about things so I know what is going on when my guys are working on projects.

i went to wyotech in 06. i think its a great school, it is mostly preparing you to work in a dealer but you go through all the basics. i took chassis fab and high performance engines and there really wasnt alot of hands on with the engines but when i was there chassis fab and high performance engines was one class that was 3 months long now i think its two classes 3 months each. im not exactly sure what your looking for but check out SAMS and theres a engine school in colorado called advanced automotive engines technical school. good luck

+1 I went there. That school is incredible. Most of the other schools rush you through in 6 months. unoh takes time but you learn more imo. Check out the link in the above post. I would take a trip there in person as the web page can do it no justice. The school owns a ractrack. Oh yeah they offer associates degrees and bachelors degrees and that is very important to know info for starting a business.

Oh yeah and there is a drag strip about 40 mins from the school called MCIR.

to 99ccz28, i am currently attending wyotech at the Laramie campus. i fell it is a great school so far and i have been up here since the late june start. i am looking to do the same thing that your wanting to do and that is open up my own performance shop. I have takin ASM which is the applied service management class and gained alot of knowledge from it. i am now in auto and plan on taking the 3 month high performance engines class if it has started before i leave, if not i have been talking to the chassis fab instructor and i think i will take it if HPE is not available.

You may want to contact your local rep and ask them a few ?'s, but as far as opening my own shop and dealership work i will try and give you a little bit of advise that i have been given. It is that you can send and apply to any place you are wanting to work not just dealerships. The business advise i will give you is that once you get the concepts down and have professionals do you paper work and financial statements and what ever for a few years until you learn what your responsible for it will then be cake if you have your customers. people do open up right after they graduate as what i am planning to do and have very great success. me personally have my dad and a few uncles that own there own business that can help me along the way. Its totally up to you if your willing to take out that big loan for a shop and pretty much signing your life away. lol well i have a few things i need to go do but if you have any other questions or want to no about the school and the rules and stuff you have to follow dont be afraid to ask me.
