Which OBDII Diagnostic tool?
Which OBDII Diagnostic tool? Hello,
I have been looking around for a diagnostic scanner. I have a 97 so it will need to be able to read OBDII. I am looking for something that will mainly scan trouble codes and such. I found this craftsman for $100, which is pretty much the most I will want to spend. Is this a good scanner or are there others that are better and will do more?

pretty much all the readers are the same, they can be found for like 60-70$ now and those would be fine, some have a couple more display features but thats it, remember these dont diagnose anything they are just code readers, will only give you the code, which if you are aware of that then that is fine.
I have a Actron CP9175, works great. Displays the code and tells you what it means on the display. Some of the cheaper ones just display the code and you have to look it up in a book or online.
These are more of a convenience item since you can get codes read for free at autozone or jiffy lube.

IMHO, what you want is a scanner that will also clear the codes for you. I use Autotap, which is a lot more expensive, but the ability to clear the codes is "priceless".
If you can read the code, you can look it up on the web on sites such as:
http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/
There are many sites, you just have to Google.
