Default Rear Ends.

I have a 2001 LS1 and i am looking to change my rear end to handle more power. I plan on stroking my stock ls1 to a 383 with an eagle rotating assembly. Texas speed ls6 heads and a bigger cam. What rear ends should i look into. Also which sizes and gear ratios are best? I want the rear end to handle well over 500 rwhp just to be safe.

talk to eric @ midwest chassis for a fab 9. gears depend on tire size, max rpm's, etc.

you'd be better served to look in the "gears and axles" forum.

I have the stock 3.42 with posi on my car. I believe all m6's came with the 3.42. But i hear that they are not too strong and tend to break once you keep adding power to the motor. I was also told that they are basically the same rear end as an s-10 pickup.

yes, I'm aware, the 10 bolt won't hold up to any type of launching especially in a 6 speed variety. talk to bob @ EPP>>>>>>>> or Eric @ midwest chassis. very common swap.

ok, sounds like you dont know much about this, except that your stock 10 bolt rear end sucks. Get either a 9 inch, or a 12 bolt as the guys above have said. gearing will depend on what your goals are. a common gear for 6 speeds is a 4.10 12 bolt, or 4.11 in the 9 inch.

I have the same stock 3.42s and i was wondering if that rear end is capable of handleling 400-450 hp?

I have blown mine on basic bolt ons twice. The 10 bolt is a ticking timebomb just waiting and your cutting the fuse shorter with the more power you give it especially with a t56. If I could go back I would have dropped the coin on a rear before it broke the first time. It is the best longterm investment on any fbody plain and simple. There are guys out there who have broke into the 10's with 10bolts but they are all A4's. There are not to may of them either. I agree with 406malibu with the gears, no doubt.

9 inch for an M6 car, 12 bolt for an A4 is the commonly accepted theory here.

I was running 11.1's on a 10-Bolt with my old A4 setup before it blew apart.

I bought a Moser 9" and I'm putting in a T56.

Most people go with 4.10's, I bought 3.89's to switch too, for now I'm keeping in my 3.50's to have a nice top-end pull.

if you don't beat on your rear end too bad, the 10bolt can hold up for a while.

but start doing hard launches and shifts with sticky tires...and its all over by the crying.

sofar i've been on my stock 10bolt...with just upgraded bearing studs and girdle for 4 yrs with 400rwhp. and i'm running a stage 4 clutch and 315s (even drag radials for 2yrs).

While your modding id just throw a T/A girdle on it and call it a day if its your Daily Driver that occasionally sees the track. But ive had good luck with my 10 bolts (as have most of the people in my f-body club). My camaro 6spd has a 10bolt, my TA th400 has a 12bolt.

If your building a track car on the other hand, do a 9". And if your staying NA, 6spd... 4.10's was awsome, and despite what people will try to tell you i still got great gas mileage (17-18 mpg when i was driving hard) .

Well the thing is it is not my daily driver. Right now i have the stock 10 bolt 3.42 as all m6's came with. But i do have 18in/315's on the back and 17in/275 up front. They are from a 2007 z06. Will this wheel and tire application worsen the wear on my rear end and raise the chances of it blowing or not?

Ok... well not being your DD, if it blows out... what do you lose? Nothing. You wanted to replace it anyways, right? Not like you were going to sell the stocker for much.

my buddies firebird is about 450hp 6.0L, centerforce 12" clutch, stock rear w/ 295/45/18's nitto 555r's he beats on it, and hasnt broken it yet.

My camaro is 500hp turbo, centerforce 12", stock rear 315/35/17 nitto555R's. Ive made passes at the track on ET streets, no problems yet.

Im not saying dont upgrade... im just saying people dont give stockers enough credit, and a new one wouldnt be first on my list. If you've got the money to spend before the car is 500hp go for it. Im sure ill be there eventually.
