Default Need to find out if my motor is a 2006 6.0 Please help

I bought a motor about 4 months ago. I was told it was from a 2006 6.0L escalade. How can I verify when it was made? I just wnat to make sure I have all the right information as I a looking at doing a cam swap, and head work to it.

Any help would be great.

I think there is a stamping on the back of the block that has a date code on it.

If you cant find it, it will have aluminum heads, an iron block with 6.0 cast into it on the front, and a DBW throttle body. I know those are characteristics all common to 02-later 6.0L blocks.

04 and up motors all have equal length head bolts. That should get rid of some questions.

now you need to figure out if its an lq9 or lq4. the escalade had the lq9. look on the back of the manifold to see if there is a plug where the brake booster hose would go. if there is a plug it will be an lq4.

I always pull a plug to be sure. Since the lq9 came in a few different configurations. Slivy SS and TBSS also I think.

TBSS was an LS2. The Silverado SS and the Escalade came with the LQ9.

I think that the plug at about 11 o'clock, is the plug being referenced.
My 05 out of a Hummer has that plug and it's not open. My engine is definately an LQ4...

Do You guys relize there is casting date on the front of the block just Above the water pump on the right side??? Should read something Like A156 The leter would indicate the month, A=January B=Feburary, And so on down the line. the next 2 digits would be the Day It was cast on. The Last digit would be the Year... A156 Would break down as January 15 of 2006.

Keep in mind, If it came out of an 06 Vehical it is possible that it may have a Late 05 casting date. I believe around September or so Is when they start assembling orders for the following year.

That's actually what I stated in my first post. The location of it is what I couldn't remember.

Take the heads off and look at the piston. Since you have them off, have 'em milled down some, prolly .020. Since it's out of an escalade, it's VERY likely to be an LQ9.

LQ9 = flatop pistons
LQ4 = dished

THIS IS EASY.....look at the flexplate (i cant see it clearly, but i know its on there from the pics) If it is a 4l60/65E flexplate, its a LQ9. LQ9 motors only came in 1/2 ton chassis applications (escalade, GMC Denali AWD trucks, etc). If it is a 4l80E flexplate (flat with the detachable steel spacer between flexplate and crank, and longer flexplate bolts, that means it came out of a 2500/3500 chassis truck, Van or Hummer, which definetly makes it a LQ4. This, of course, is correct as long as the flexplate on the motor is the original flexplate! BUT.......ya could always check a piston if all of the above fails! Any signs that the motor had the full plastic cover (valvecover to valvecover 3-piece cover, such as the "MAX" cover or the cadillac cover" can tip u off as to the motors origins. The oil filler cap will have a short, 1" - 11/2" plastic spacer tube between the cap and the valvecover, so it sits at the correct heigth with the LQ9 escalade engine cover. If it has the taller 3-4" plastic angled riser, it most likely is a LQ4, and didn't have a escalade or "maX" SS engine cover. BUT....you cold always take a peek at a piston if all else fails

Not to start a pissing match but rather for clarification. Here is some more information pertaing to these Engine Blocks.

The only numbers on the back of the Block Are the Casting numbers and the Engine size. There is also a Foundry Identification mark on the back.

As far as Iron 6.0L engines go. 99 and 2000 had Iron heads with an 873 casting. In 2001 They started using aluminum casting 317 and 035 Heads. All Iron engines from 99-2002 were cabale actuated. In 2003 they started using electronic DBW set ups.

How ever there is ocasionally an exception to the rule and comercial vehicals often follow different production time lines. I have seen an 03 3500 comercial use work truck that was equipped with a cable actuated Throtle body. That maybe a case were GM was useing up inventory in In 1ton applicatioins that were to be used for comercial applications.
