looking back on it, i wish i would have got an auto. each has its perks, but i think i would be happier with the auto. hindsight is 20/20

I'm looking to buy either an 05 or 06 auto. Can the stock auto handle a good amount of power? I have the same trans in my vette and after about 10 bottles (150 shot) it still shifts great. Did the GTO get the vette internals by any chance?

Oh yeah, are there any benefits to getting an 06 over an 05?

I found killer deals on 04 autos around where I live.. I drove one, and I wasn't sold on it. The m6 though took my heart. I enjoy drag racing, but I definitely am not going to bracket race or anything like that. I'm going to get more experience in auto crossing this year, and I'm sure the manual will come in handy for that. I had an A4 GP (duh) and it was decent, the tranny wasn't very strong and I was always nervous, but after it was tuned it could definitely slam into gears. But I missed having a clutch and I hated using TapShift

Either way wouldnt bother me. Only time I dont like an auto trans would be in an actual sports car. Because buying a sports car with an automatic is like marrying a pregnant woman so you dont have to do any work.

it's all in the tune, if you get a good tune on the car you should be fine.

Just bought my 05 Cyclone Grey 6speed w/ 31k for $16K.

the 4l60e will hold a lot of power in stock form. It all depends how you drive it though.

I've had mine down the track just a few times with well over 400whp (4 with the blower), because that's all it takes to get the best ET. I wouldn't worry until the 500+ mark honestly.

A good trans tune will make a MASSIVE difference. I spent several hours over the course of a couple months fine tuning the settings, shift time, trq mngt, line pressure, shift rpm part and WOT, TCC release and apply.
Now it's PERFECT, and I love it.

The other great thing about an 04 is the lean cruise. The 16-21 mpg ratings for the auto are a thing of the past. I can pull 24-25mpg at 65-70mph with a safe lean cruise tune. It creeps up near 28mpg around 50mph....

unless your a track junkie, M6 dumdumdum... Its so much more fun, and if you have a driver mod stick at the track is excellent, plus if you like roll races you cant beat stick... and only real men drive stick lol

I'll tell you this much, my 98 t/a had the norm, lid/longtubes/3in catback,dragbag,rear drag springs,3500 tci converter, free mods, nittos and ran 12.54 consistently....best 1/8th mile ever was 8.0 @ 86 on the 12.54 @ 107.

My 2005 gto, pacesetter longtubes(same brand as 98) catless mids, 3600 FTI stall, nittos and a k/n CAI. I went 8.050 twice the 2nd night I took it to the track this year.

On the spray when I get back I'm shooting for low mid 7s.

I never considered getting a 6spd. Ive owned a dozen or so manual's and at least twice that many auto's. Both have ups and downs, but i knew i was going to be racing the GTO so auto was in the cards from the moment i decided i was going to buy 1.

Manuals are fun,but for a DD i hate em,especially if you have any type of commute in rush hour traffic

My '06 GTO is a weekend toy so having the 6 spd. is fun...my '94 Jeep, '01 Z71 and '06 Impala are all automatics so it feels good to go out on a nice day and bang some gears.

I have a daily driver stalled auto(3200). I have no problem dragging people from a roll and I can tear em up at the track too. It only runs high 6's, not bad for a DD
