Default Max LS1 displacement

I was under the impression that ls1's couldn't be made to be that large. The biggest stock block LS1 i've read about here is i think a 408. I know that with a 383 stroker crank the block needs to be modified for clearance, but searching the internet i saw an eagle ls1 crank with a 4.1" stroke for a 393. than i saw a 434 stoker kit, and slp offers a 427 stroker rotating assembly. I know they modified the camaros to be an ss, so i figure they should reputable.

http://www.slponline.com/view_product.asp?P=12427R58

My question is how big can an ls1 go and still be dependable. will a 434 bore the cylinder out so far that sleeves will be to thin? Is it safer to stick with a 383 will a 393 needed to be cleared so far that block will be weakened? Most of these assemblies are forged and balanced and i would like to eventually add a 200 shot of nitrous to an all forged engine, would that be safe with a 427 or a 434?

I would appreciate all your opinions and all your help.

A stock 346ci ls1 can be honed and stroked to a 383ci. The 4.1 crank is a option but not to safe. The ls2 has thicker sleaves and can be bored and stoked to the 427. A stroker in the ls2 can get you 408ci.

How deep are your pockets?

there are 500ci+ options these days with aftermarket blocks if you want to go down that road.

it depends what set u you are going with. if it is FI you will want much thicker cylinder walls then you would on a naturally aspirated engine for it to be reliable.

did you already have your ls1 block or fixin' to buy one? bc the earlier year blocks are different than the later years and cannot be machined as much.

You could resleve it. There was a LS6 resleved and stroked out to a 427 on e-bay. I gets expensive though. Something like 1800 dollars.

don't buy engines on ebay. talk to one of the sponsors on this forum and get a proper engine instead of a piece pf junk that will blow up as soon as you start it.

my pockets arent that deep and an aftermarket block is probably not an option at first, but i have a 2002 Z28 in my sites. I know they come with the Ls6 intake that year and the better fuel tank, there are some other advantages to the latter year cars i cant name right now. my plan was to make sure the exhaust is taken care of and then do a stroker motor. I've seen the 383 kits from eagle and that was i originally planned but then i cam across the lager displacement kits and i figured since the car is high mileage and probably need the block honed anyway, i might as well get it bored while its opened up. I was just wondering what the biggest displacement that is safe with a future 200 shot of nitrous, without resleeving.

Lunati sells a 4.125 stroker kit. This turns your ls1 into a 395-396 stroker. I have it in my Trans Am and the torque is INSANE. But eagle kits are cheaper. You can't go as big but the 4.1 kit cost the same as a 4.0 kit and the machining cost on the block will be the same. Ps the guy that said the 4.1 kits arent too safe either hasn't run that set up before or if he has it wasn't built too well. Mine will handle a 275 shot of N2O all day and even an occasional 300 shot with a dual stage set up. And its been going strong since 2005.

The guy who was selling the re-sleeved LS6 on ebay also had it on this website. But I'd have to say if you can get 395-396 cubes out of the block with out sleeving it, I'd def. do that.

thanks for all the info, I should be picking up a 2002 z28 as soon as i can save up the money. that lunati kit sounds like the deal because i want to go a big as possible but still be reliable with the n2o.

There are kits out there to take it to 396 (unsleeved) but IMO the piston is too short and rocks more in the bore and 383 is as large as you should take a street motor that requires durability......

383ci (for a std 3.90 bore motor) is a safe bet for the average engine builder but I opted for
4.100 stroke combo (395ci) since my buddy is an engine builder by trade.
The torque is crazy (~450lbs at 3500 rpm)
10k miles and going strong!

450 lb ft at 3500 rpm is retarded on a N/A Ls1! Woo!

How much would you trade off in tq between the 383 and 396? ...I know

3.905" is really the largest bore you will want to go. That would make a 347 with a stock crank.

Nowadays, with LS2 blocks being so cheap, you're almost wasting money on an LS1 383 when you can build an LS2 402 stroker with a larger bore for less, oftentimes.

The 4xx" engines are out of other blocks. 408's are iron-block LQ9 strokers. 402's are LS2 strokers. LS2's can be re-sleeved to 427". LS7's ARE 427". The iron GMPP "LSX" block can be made into all sorts of displacements. Even bigger than 454" can be had out of it.

I would go with a new shortblock if you are planning beyond a 383 with a bottle behind it, and want to stay reliable. Just like said above^^^. That is just like throwing money away because the extra couple hundred will net you more cubes and spray all day long with a 402-408 if your looking for as much displacement as possible on a budget.
