Are the MSD coil packs any better than the factory LS1? Worth buying for L92 build?

Theres been some testing done that showed some of the truck coils put out more than the LS1 coils, but nobody sees any dyno results I don't think. I would only use them if I was going to relocate under the cowl for more clearance, since they're smaller. On a side note, whens about a good time to replace the stock coils? Mine have probably 150k on them now. Where could I get some decently priced stockers?

my friend put these on his procharged c5 z06 and had nothing but problems with them. the build quality seemed pretty shotty. kept getting corroded and grounding themselves out against his valve covers causing misfires all over the place. he ended up just putting the stockers back on and throwing the MSDs in a box in the closet.

I was reading over the weekend that the problem with the msd coils is that the factory settings for dwell time is too much. Think of dwell time not as discharge time, but rather charging time. If you charge them too long, they will burn out. Someone had actually contacted MSD and found out that the factory ls1 settings were charging the coil packs too long, which is what was causing them to crap out because you were overheating them by having too high of a dwell time.

I just switched over to the Yukon/Truck 6.0l coil packs and it helped to reduce some of the random misfires and throttle response is a little cleaner as well. Who knows if I gained any full throttle hp, but for better drivability, it was certainly worth the $130 I spent.

After my first set of 8 MSD LS1 coils purchased about 3 years ago, I have replaced 5 and 4 of them at my $. Talked to MSD reps at the local dragstrip to see what was happening? Missfire at high rpms? No help, so have been running stock LS1 coils for about 2 years.

Stock LS1 coils =
MSD Blaster coils =

Truck LS2 coils =

Truck coils are the same on my Hyundai

Truck LS2 > MSD > LS1

Embarrassing that the Hyundai 4cyl has better spark then a V8

They all lick

But... if you wanna replace em. and money is an issue, Truck LS2 coils win hands down

Truck LS2 = 2x LS1 (power wise)

MSD is just plain wierd - dual spark is fine, but not at reduced secondary current draw. But they do idle nice

Thanks for the good info "Tech Heads". I was seriously considering swapping my stock coils for MSD. But sounds as if I should spend my money elswhere.

I run MSD on my boosted motor and never have a problem. When I ran the stock LS2 coils, the spark would be blown-out at high RPM even with NGK TR6 gap 0.022". I'm very happy with MSD.

You guys should check with Kurt Urban regarding LS coils. He has done extensive testing on all the different styles. Apparently the ones to have are known as Melco coils part number 12558693.

MSD had problems with their LS coils when the first came out. Many of them split-open , didn't work right or went bad. They don't have any of those problems anymore. Mine are rock-solid.

FWIW, if you are running a 6 heat range plug you shouldn't be making enough power to blow out the spark with stock coils.
