wont spin 1st
wont spin 1st hey, i was wondering if its normal for a 6 spd, 4:10 geared ls1 to not be able to spin 1st gear without dumping the clutch. it hooks and pulls. the tires are 245/50 bridgestone potenzas.

mine with 3.42's will spin some decent 275's in first.. and then again shifting into 2nd. What RPMs are you punching it at? at low rpm mine will catch at first, and once the rpms get a little higher start to lose traction

Also keep in mind that it's actually harder to spin with 4.10s than 3.42s. You have good tires, though a bit smallish. If your clutch is factory and/or you have some suspension done, with those gears I can totally see a dead hook.

I don't see how people keep posting up not being able to spin in first gear on street tires unless something is wrong with their car.
Even my old '96 LT1 and my '03 Volkswagon GTI beater can spin em in first gear.

when i had the 3.08 gears in my 94 s15 it would spin the crap out of the 32's i had on there. When I went to 3.73 it would not do it. i now have 31's on there and the street has to be wet to make it spin them. I also installed a torsen carrier when I went to the 3.73 instead of the open diff. that may just be the diff
My V6 will spin first, so will the T/A... Both auto. The T/A has 3.08 gears also and will spin all the way through first and maybe into second, I haven't driven it enough to know if it will spin into second, I always let off.

Don't want to hijack but what you are saying here is that with the 4.10s vs the 3.42s that the 4.10s are less likely to spin due to the tire rotating much faster at lets say 3k with the 4.10s as opposed to the 3.42s? So would 4.10s in a m6 car dead hook better as well or would it cause more spin? I always thought it would spin worst but maybe I thought wrong. I'm trying to work getting my 2.2 60ft times down and have been avoiding gears so I wouldn't have to relearn right now lol.

+1 You actually have it backwards. At 3000rpm, a car with 3.42s will have a higher wheel speed than a car with 4.10s. For this reason, sometimes it is easier to hook a 4.10 than a 3.42. I wouldn't say that the load is "lighter" on the engine because it's not, but if it's recovering from a bog condition it will be in the low RPMs for a shorter period of time with the 4.10 gear, this is just one way to look at it.

Thank ya sir very helpful. I do tend to either spin or bog and the bog takes a long time to recover from as is. Could launch smoother from a lower rpm with the 4.10s, since the car would climb back up through the rpms quicker. Atleast thats what I think you're saying. Although I would think that would in turn make it easier to break the tires loose since the rpms would be climbing closer to max hp/tq while the tires are still rotating at a lower speed? Appreciate the explanation I never really looked into gearing too much.
question, is that rolling slowly and giving the car enough throttle to downshift from 2nd to 1st? or keeping the car in 1st already?
