Default Just got a LS1 Trans Am (Couple of questions)

HI,
I just bought a 2000 Trans Am. I just had a couple of questions. First, is the exhaust near the front of the car supposed to hang so low? It scrapes the exhaust when I go over the speed bumps in my apartment complex. Second, is there supposed to be a 'whistling' sound when I accelerate and also while at cruising speed? Thanks for any assistance!

do you know if it is a stock exhaust? I hear the slp headers at least for that matter hang severly low and that could be the reason

I believe it is stock, I'm not sure. I know it's not a performance aftermarket exhaust for sure.

haha come on guys.

The exhaust is probably normal, it is pretty low to the ground anyways. The whistling I really couldnt tell you unless I heard it. goodluck with the car, you will love it.

Yeah. Cute. It's cool to make the joke, but its even cooler to come clean on it. The gentleman asked a question. If you're not going to help him answer that question, then don't post. I'm not trying to sound like a babysitter. I'm just saying that I ask questions on this site too. When I do, I would like to get an honest answer, so I can solve whatever problem I have at the time. That is what I expect, and the O.P. should be able to expect the same. Any bullshit answers just get in the way.

There were never any 4th Gen F-body's with a factory installed supercharger. So that is not your whistling. But I have noticed a whine on my car ever since I installed my longtubes and they definitely hang lower than the factory exhaust. I can't say I've ever scraped my exhaust when it was factory or since the upgrade, but unless you're doing alot of Off-Roading with your T/A it isn't that simple to scrape with the factory pipes. You may have some LT's that were installed prior to your ownership and that may explain your whistle as well. Guess I can't say for sure. Do you have any underbody and/or under the hood pictures you could post, so we could take a look at what we're dealing with?

another thing is, my stock exhaust always would hit certain things, so thats why i feel it is probably normal. Also what I just thought of is maybe your car has been lowered which would cause that issue also. yep, pics would help.

Yeah, good call on the possibility of it being lowered. My car isn't. Well not yet, so I didn't think of that.

Just to throw in my 2cents. The whistling could very possibly be an exhaust leak due to the fact that your headers are being "hit" quite frequently. I would atleast take a look at that.

just pray to god that whistling isn't coming from your rear end. could be a belt squeal or a hole in the exhaust that's constantly getting scrapped.

I've seen some cars whistle more then others and depends if there is an aftermarket intake.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to have a Borla cat-back put on in a week or two and have them check it out. I'll try to post some pics later of the current exhaust.

Does this whistling sound arise when you are at a dead stop? Is your car an A4 or an M6? If you're an M6 and you experience this whine/whistle with your car in gear ONLY, then you could have some bad synchros in your transmission. My car does it in 4th and 6th on occasion. If you're an A4 guy...your torque converter maybe?! I don't know much about the automatics.

As far as your exhaust scraping...without pictures to help us out...I don't no.

No, it doesn't whine at idle. Only during acceleration, and at cruising speed it kinda 'howls'..i guess is the best way to explain it.
