I was going to point that out. the car can take a hit but it only absorbs a small fraction on the impact cause the impact 'crush zones' are so small. its going to be harsh on the occupants, these things are only smart in the cities...as long as you stay off the freeways

Exactly, so you get in a colision and then are rebounded into more traffic to get hit again, kind of like a pool ball. No thanks.

That's going to ruin your day no matter what car you're driving. I doubt that even an Excursion would have fared well in that situation.

They are adequate safe, they are basically just a rollcage on wheels with a bit of plastic wrapped around. When it was new, there were several reports of accidents were the smart was hit by larger car and rolled several times; or one time a truck driver didn't saw a woman in their Smart, and after a lane change, the Smart was pushed in the front of the truck. The driver only heard a short noise, and proceed to drive, still pushing the smart. After a half mile, he finally stopped for a red light.
The problem with the smart is that if you are hit by a large car, the Smart will be catapulted into the fauna..

Some pics of Smarts after crashes:

Of course you can find bad pictures from any car..

The only vehicle I would go up against a semi with would be a Dodge Ram CTD. A local guy in his Ram got t-boned by a semi that ran a stop sign. Needless to say both vehicles were totaled. The guy driving the Ram only had some bumps and bruises but the guy driving the semi was killed. Also, the Ram had severe frame damage but the semi's frame actually broke off into two pieces.

That's awesome if you're planning on getting hit by a stationary barrier. Otherwise, I would recommend doing a little more research...

Here's my question.... how safe are you going to be on the second or third collision, when the air-bags have already gone off, and you get thrown into oncoming traffic to get hit a second or third time. It's a simple mass vs mass equation, and without enough of a crumple zone around you, you're riding in a coffin with airbags.

I saw one of these the other day going down the interstate and the damn thing is smaller than a golf cart.

I don't know why that guy was risking his life to save a couple of gallons of motor fuel. It is a city car only. No matter what regulations it can pass. You can't beat the laws of kinematics, however, you CAN die trying.

I think it was posted in this Automotive news section, but I don't remember.

Smart Cars, the Honda Fit, and the Toyota Yaris crash tests showed passengers would sustain SIGNIFICANT leg damage in the even of a frontal collision.

I will try to find where that was said.

Well I don't think they're that safe and once my Aunt had an accident where she broke her wrist... she was in a Smart car earlier and had she still been in it apparently she probably would have died.
