Confused on LT1 oil capacity

I have the service manuals for my 96 and it says the same thing about 5 in the Camaro and 4.5 in the firebird. That doesn't make any sense to me, but whatever.

if it helps in our fluid capacity guides at work it says 5.5 qts with the short filter

it depends,if u have a oil cooler or not. when u drain the oil out some will still remain in,so u have to go a bit less than the capacity. my 97' Z doesnt have a cooler and my manual says 4.7 quarts at the change of oil and filter.

Just make sure you put oil in the filter first... Then put it In the engine/oil pan go with 4 and go from there...

Just dont use crap oil. If you are using standard use "Valvoline" with some lucus.
If synthetic use Moble 1

What happens if one does not fill the filter first?
I have to assume that the GM engineers have accounted for folks NOT doing when designing the motor. Therefore, I will assume that if one forgets, it should be harmless or lots of folks would have wasted their motors.

there is plently oil in the car even after draining.. it's a good idea to pre fill filter, but it's not going to kill the motor if you forgot one or two times.
