Default Turbo LS1 Hybrid Car

Hey guys, I'm much more of a lurker on this forum then a poster but decided that its time to step out and say whats up! For starters, I've got a 1971 Datsun 240Z. With an LS1 from a 2001 firebird. I went through the whole upgrade list, Heads / cam / intake / headers / throttle body / Yadda yadda... And managed to pull a 10.9@124 in the 1/4 on pump gas and Drag slicks. After the track day, I had to choose a path in the course of hp. Either bigger cubes, Juice it, or forced induction. Obviously, coming from a DSM back ground I decided that Turbo was right up my alley. So I built a home made turbo kit from scratch and put it all together. I'm still in the process of tuning it all. Very little WOT tuning and lots of drivability tuning. I'm pretty happy with the results so far. Really fun car to drive with boost! Anyways... Here are some pics for you guys to snack on. Enjoy!

For the Z car, if you want to keep the rear of the car independent you've only got a couple of options. I'm using a rear diff out of an early 90's Infinity Q45. And the Axles are custom, using pieces from the Infinity's axles, and a custom shaft in the middle. Looks like this....

The trans is a stock T56, with a ram power grip clutch that came with my motor / trans when I bought it. I think the clutch is going to start giving now with the increased power from the turbo. I JUST got this thing running in the last couple weeks so I haven't be able to take it out to the track just yet. Has anyone on here used these plug wires and had success, while using forced induction? Seems like the car doesn't pull through the RPM's smoothly up top and I'm starting to think its ignition related.

that maybe a fuel problem what's the pressure like? amazing how tight a fit that is but at least you can get to the spark plugs lol.

For fuel I've got a sumped 15 gal. fuel cell. 2x -8 bungs feed two Walbro 255 hp pumps. The pumps feed a Y block and a -8 line runs under the car and feeds a malory boost rising fuel pressure regulator. From the regulator a -6 line returns to the tank. The regulator feeds the stock fuel rail with a -8 line and I've got 60lb injector under the rails. I'm not so sure its a fuel problem. I just need to go out and spend some more time tuning the car.

I've got some different wires here that I could chuck in if need be. I've found that its easiest to change the plugs with the car on a lift and doing the job from under the car. takes aprox. 30 - 45min. There's a big of room front to back in the Z car engine bay, but side to side its a different story. Pretty narrow!

I've never weighed the car, but if I had to guess I would say it weigh's around 24 - 2500lbs. When the car had just a 224R cam, shorty headers and exhaust. It would pull even on the highway with 450+ hp DSM's

The car has not been dynoed with the turbo yet. In the past I dynoed 411 with a TorquerV2 and stock 243 heads.

Interested to see how the Q45 rear holds up. I am plannin on swapping one in my s14 240 but kinda scared it won't hold up. 408 ls1/th350 with couple small stages. Been 1.4 60s but snapped few axles on stock rear in the process

So far I've had zero problems with the rear, and its taken quite a few 1.5 60ft. launches too. Z guys with the stock diff / axle set ups have pulled crazy wheelies before, but nothing is bullet proof. I don't think I have heard of anyone breaking these custom axles yet, we'll see. When that time comes, I'll figure out a way to put a 9" under there. Haha!

I changed the exhaust a little bit since the pic. No more single!

Wow really looks great. One of my favorite swaps. That thing has got to be a handful with all that HP and such little weight. That really is some great work. I also really love how you can tell that it was home built (no offense). It just looks like a garage built monster. Again... that thing is awesome looking.

There are all kinds of people with LSx powered S30's. It is an extremely popular hybrid platform. There are all kinds of S30's running around with 2jz's, RB's, Sr20's, Buick GN motors (forget their name)... just about everything.

Check out http://www.hybridz.org if you are interested in seeing some of them.

People cut some pretty quick 60's on them with no problem. I wouldn't worry about it.
