Default Day 1 of 224/228 cam, 96mm TB, heads, 92mm FAST swap

Well all never seems to go as planned. We will need to finish up tomorrow after working on it from 8-6 today. A couple of the ARP head bolts had to be filed as they had some bad spots from rattling around in the box (I am shocked they don't use plastic boots). The screws going into the IAC and TPS needed ground down as they were too long for the 96mm TB. The cam was really pretty easy, heads went on good other than the ARP's and now tomorrow it is the FAST and firing it up. So does the FAST ship with extra hardware? I have a bunch of stuff that looks like it doesn't get used. Also in the instruction sheet it said the TB is held on with four supplied M6 hex bolts. Well I didn't have any in there but did have four M6 socket heads. That's the only thing that would fit regardless.

So hopefully by tomorrow at Noon I hope to get a clip of it firing up and idling. Need to figure this FAST intake out!

I took my Intake and TB to Home Depot and selected some nice stainless steel bolts, lock washers and nuts that would fit without "customization".

People were looking at me funny, and the cashier was trying to figure out of they sold car Intakes and TBs

Just remember to use the flat headed bolts (if supplied) on the valley cover be fore you put the FAST on or your could crack the bottom when bolting it down. If you didn't get any then you can get ones at home depot or lowes, etc.

So to get the stock bellows on the 96mm TB I had to cut off the last groove.

Still need to add the 42's and get a tune. It doesn't come on and off idle right currently. Is that something the tune will address? It seems snappier but haven't really turned it up much.

I also wonder about lashing the rockers. We took the valve covers off enough times to where the bolt holes stripped out on a couple and I still get a tick. I think 1 or 2 still make some noise so what is everyone else doing for lash?

Video clip is loading now of the idle with the 224/228

How are you running your PCV? You have metered air going to the valve cover and then you're pulling air into the intake manifold port behind the TB - that looks good, stock setup. But then you have a breather instead of an oil cap. That would make you have a rough idle, and eventually will give you error code P0174. Putting your oil cap back should fix it.

I don't know. I had it the same way when it went 11.79 and it was smoothe as silk. It still is just the idle hunt on throttle blips off-idle isn't good.

The problem with that breather is unmetered air gets pulled in - air gets into the motor that the MAF didn't see. For the most part it will just mess up the idle because at higher RPM most of the air will come in through the throttle body, not the PCV side.

People debate whether 'stock PCV' style or 'open breather' style setup is better. But right now you're running both which will mess up your idle.

If you go breather you need to remove PCV lines & plug up the ports. If you go stock PCV you can't run that breather.

Personally I run the stock style with a catch can and it works well.

So with this increase in power does anyone think a 10.90 may be possible?

Gee that sounds familiar. Now go get it tuned and then hit the track, this good air should make for some great passes.

Running a breather while keeping all the original PVC setup is wrong.
