Default K&N FIPK + Ram Air Mod??

Hey guys,

When I purchased the car a few years ago it came with the K&N FIPK already installed (previous owner). For those who aren't familiar with the setup, it does away with the lid + airbox and uses a cone-shaped filter in its place. There's no form of seal that would channel the air forced in from the hood scoop so I'm not sure precisely what the benefits are.

I'm at a point from a mod standpoint where there isn't much else to do outside of an EWP or different jets for the N2O. In view of this, I started looking into the ram air setups. I've checked out the Fast Toys setup as well as a few of the home-built custom setups and they all look nice, however I don't know if there's any way those mods would work with the K&N FIPK. Anyone understand the pros and cons of both (K&N FIPK vs. standard lid system with Ram Air mod) and care to shed some light on it for me?

Thanks!

I have the K&N FIPK on my TA. I have people bustin my sack about the no heat shield **** so I called K&N tec guy and he said the system is disigned to only use air that comes in from the front of the engine bay. I have the Ram air hood on mine so the air comes right in at the filter. I'm about maxed out with my mod's to. Putting on 243's that's getting worked up from A.I next week. I think I'm just going to leave the K&N and call it good!

Just leave it as is or revert to a lid setup.

I don't think any of the ram air mods would work with your K&N setup; they all require a sealed air box (or lid) to be effective. The FIPK doesn't seem to draw in as much cold air as a ram air setup would. The ram air systems also create a pressure gradient that literally forces a bit more air into the intake (especially at highway speeds). If it was me, I would ditch the FIPK and go with a ram air system.

By the way there is a simliar thread on this topic. Search for " fast toys air lid or k&n cold air intake" its in gen III external engine. That might help you decide too, good luck with it!

Hey guys -- thanks for all of your help with this. Been debating on reverting back to a lid setup however I'm not sure if that's worthwhile. Will dig deeper on this.

you will see better gains with a ram air setup and a lid...it brings in fresh cool air and will be pressurized when at speed...my honest guess with my non ac ram air ad lid setup will gain around 1.5mph on the low side...

here is a thread for you to check out

i would go with the lid and some sort of a bottom breathing ram air or the sux2bu setup if you have a Camaro

Great idea. Considering that is what Volant does I am surprised I haven't seen it before with a K&N...
