Default Why is the SS no longer top of the line?

Sorry if I've missed something here, but it sounds like if a Z28 comes out it will be above the SS. Why have they swapped spots in the prestige order? The SS was always the top of the line.

Cool Z-28

From 67 to 74 the Z-28 had the most HP for a sbc, maybe they got it right again!! The SS & RS were more for looks, not HP.

because any car (nowadays being half of the GM fleet) can be a SS

there is only one car that can be a Z28

67-69 z28 was the top. even 70-73 you could say that to...
you can maybe say the SS 396 cars were better... but in reality the z28 matched performance AND handling while the SS was more straight line only.

RS has been used true to its roots... an apperance package

SS was straight line performance... the SS350 SS396 and SS454(think chevelle)

but now you have SS everything... cobalt SS??

when you say i have an SS... could be a number of cars... there is only 1 Z/28....

Yeah, a **** TON of repeated Z/28 Vs. SS threads. A **** LOAD of them. It's been beat to ******* death.

I expected someone who joined in '08 to start a thread with this title.

Here come the morass of "SS 396 was best," "NO! The 302 Z/28 was best!" replies.

People who know the history of the Camaro know the difference in the cars performance packages.

AMEN! I hope this gets locked before it blows up into an argument and too much more false info gets spread. SS was straight line performance and the Z28s couldn't touch it. Z28 was built for handling road courses and SS couldn't touch it. SS was big CI big HP for street brawling. Z28 was for the TA series and had to fit under the 305ci rule. Two seperate packages for two seperate purposes. There were 2 302s offered. Standard 4bbl 302 and the cross-ram 302. SS has always been the top seller, that's why they market it over the Z28 on so many other models. The Z28 was more of the "sleeper" package. Remember, they made a SS454 Camaro in 1970. If you wanna take it one step farther, the top dogs were the COPO & ZL1s. The reason this gets so heated is Z28 owners(SOME, not all) have an inferiority complex when comparing the two & SS owners(SOME, not all) have a superiority complex when comparing the two. Each side wants to believe their respected model is "top dog" and will skew the facts to make it seem that way. Then, they'll post it and now the history of the models/packages are skewed.

dont knock the cobalt ss. that car can out handle and stop an fbody, and w/ about 800 in mods, it will stay with it in 1/4 mile. so don't knock it, cuz once you drive it. you'll love it. I know i loved mine. RIP

Wasn't RS actually a suspension / appearance package? i could have sworn they added stiffer springs and shocks back then as well.

X2 on the Cobalt. It also almost edged out the C6 in lateral Gs and slalom in some mag I read. And that is with the 205bhp SCd engine. Who knows what the new 260hp, turboed one will do. Also, the RS was just an appearance package on the 1st gens. Although on the 4th gens, it was actually a little performace increase too.

The SS was CONSIDERED top of the line as it's performance was advertised through CIs and the Z28 "only" offered a 302. Like said, it was a sleeper for sure. The SS and Z28 was targeted for two totally different directions so neither was "better" than the other except which one appealed more to the customer's wants. It remained that way till SS was not offered anymore until '96 when then, in fact, it was the premium model. It stayed that way until it ended production in '02. I know, I know, there really was no performance difference between the Z28 and SS during the LS1 years but come on, we all know the SS USUALLY was priced higher and was advertised with more HP due to the hood & exhaust. Not to mention the suspension was stiffer. If you had a choice, would you rather have the SS hood/spoiler or Z28? Ok, that's why the SS had that and was priced higher. Not to mention the SS could be a fitted with a host of options from SLP, the GMMG cars were SSs, the LEs were SSs & the ZL1s came with SS options. Not because one was better than the other, just because more people THOUGHT of the SS as the better car and easier to make money off of.

I remember how badass it was to have a Camaro SS...I mean, when I saw an SS I was like whoaaaaa. Same thing with the Caprice style Impala SS's. These were cars worthy of being called an SS. Now there's SS everything. I'm suprised they haven't figured out a way to make an Aveo SS. When the only thing you could get with an SS emblem was a Camaro, it was special. Once SS models were easily obtainable...Cobalt, Silverado, HHR, Malibu? Then they took the Monte Carlo and the Impala and gave it that same type of stature. It lost it's appeal with the styling and marketing of these cars. There was something that Chevy did with the cars they called SS in the late 90's and early 2000's that was different. Period.
