Wouldn't lower gears (higher numerically, for newbs) would be better for stoplight to stoplight racing? Or, are you saying that you want higher gears for traction reasons?

My real question is for M6 people. I hear that you lose usefulness of first gear with low gears like the 4.10s because the car climbs the RPMs so quickly. Opinions?

I was thinkning about going with 4.10s as my next mod. done headers and cut-outs.

For bolt on cars it's a great gear for a M6. I get 22mpg around town to work and back, and 25 on average on the highway going 78mph on avg.
First gear is a treat to play around with, I can mat it and light em up at any speed in first. But yes the revlimiter comes up real quick when you dump it out of the hole.

currently own a 98 firebird formula, my mods are LTs headers, slp lid, 3600 stall, with 2.73s, my best time a 12.9. i thinking on changing gears from 2.73s to 3.73s. my conceren is that with the gear change will i be able to lower my time. if yes, how much. thanks.

Default 2.73's to 3.73's

I you read all the postings in this thread which I obviously didn't it says if you already have a high stall torque converter you would only gain .1

I gained .3 on my 95 Z28 LT1 but I didn't have a high stall torque converter when I did the gear change. I did get a slight gear whine. I did the shimes 3 times until I got the gears quite enough for me to live with.

I must admit I am a little reluctant to put my 3.73's in 99 Z28 because I don't want a noisey rear end, on the other hand gears cost me $170 high stall is $500!

Don't know if anyone else has pointed this out yet, but technically...

higher the number = the lower the gear (known as low or short gears)
lower the number = the higher the gear (known as high or tall gears)

The higher the gear, the higher the top speed, but the slower the acceleration
The lower the gear, the lower the top speed, but the higher the acceleration

I have 3.42's in my car right now and I know I won't feel a real difference if I go to 3.73's so I want to go up to 4.10's.

I know my gas mileage will go down a little but my car is really only driven around town and makes a couple shore trips so that won't bother me to much.

However how bad is first gear? I never really dump the clutch out of the hole, mainly slip it but how fast does first gear end? And I am on street radials so am I going to have major traction problems? Also will I be shifting into 5th going down the 1/4 mile?

Thanks in advance.

If your car is stock, 3.42s

You can also check the gear calculator at the beginning of the page. At 80mph in 6th gear, you should be crusing at 1800rpms with the 3.42s.

3.73's are the highest I would personally go on an A4. I went from 2.73 to 3.73's on my 3rd gen, great difference in feel, kept the car in its powerband, definetly quicker, etc.

4.10's are to low a gear for an auto IMO, you will be pulling close to 4000RPM's at highway speeds. There are calculators that can show you the exact RPM with your tire size @ various MPH. Unless the car is for track only I think you'd regret greatly going with such low gears on an A4.

I have 3.23's in my car, not sure if I will go to a 3.73 with a 3200 stall. Or just get the stall, based on information people have stated from here. I'll probably still get both, just so I have the gears in.

did you ever go threw with the gear swap? I only ask cuz i just did a 3400 stall and I don't want to get the gear if it will only net me a tenth.... any track results? thanks, steve.

Default 2.73 to 3.73

I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of 1/4 or 1/8 mile changes i could expect by swapping in a set of 3.73s (i currently have stock 2.73s). would it be worth my while to swap?

You'll gain more with a stall.

I did that on my 95 Z28 2.73''s to 3.73's I dropped .3 of a second.

Definatley a worthwile swap the car felt totally different much more responsive no flat spots you won't regret doing gears.

But as has been said you would gain more from a stall.

I dropped .5 from a stall on this car, but it's easier and cheaper to do gears though!
