Default LED Side Mirror Turn Signal Writeup v1

Ok, here is the writeup I've been promising for a while. I accidently deleted most of the detailed pictures but what I could get again easily is in the PDF. This writeup will probably change over time, I will post it again if it does.

You will need adobe acrobat or something similar to read the PDF file, it was the easiest way to format it and still not take a day of writing HTML. The writeup is a large file, approximatly 581kb. If you are on a 56k this could take a while to download!

You can get acrobat reader here .

The Writeup!

If you have any questions or would like to get the LED Kit from me to make this install a little easier, let me know

Enjoy!

Damn it, took MY idea!! Not really, you did it first so it's YOUR idea! Props to ya!!! Now when I do mine I'll have the concept on how to do it! Mine will slightly differ, one day I'll get around to doing it!

I wanna see some finished pics and even some video, if possible, please!!

It occurs to me that the LEDs don't look properly aimed. Since the main point of this mod is for a car that is along side of you is now able to see your turn signals, because it is too far forward to see the rear and too close to see the front side blinking. It seems they would need to be aimed not to the rear of the car, but slightly outward at a 45* angle and maybe slightly up.

Does that make sense?
Or am I missing the point of these being purely cosmetic?

While LEDs do have a narrow viewing angle for full intensity, they can be seen glowing from the side. This, and the glass they are going through also diffracts the light. You can see these blinking from beside the car, they just aren't as bright as from behind / on the side behind.

This should be obvious from http://mindmod.com/photos/car/turn_signals/right.avi

I'd agree, they would be more effective if aimed, but will work nonetheless. On our cars I'm not sure it'd even matter too much either way, they're just SWEET looking!!

I remembered an idea I had a while back. Put some kind of bright yellow light source behind the mirrored lens. When activated it would create a yellow glow around the mirror. You might not see it in the day, but it would look real cool at night.

I thought about doing that as well, wouldn't be that hard. I'd probably just remove the mirror housing, spray the inside with a chrome spraypaint, then put LEDs facing towards the housing. That was just my idea on how I would do it though.

I was thinking more simple, like just mount a 1157 bulb behind there. Then use a relay to power it.

If you really want wild, my other idea was to remove them and mount small cameras there or further forward on the car like the front side marker lights. Then mount 2 5" LCD's on both sides of the instrument cluster. Might not work on a camaro, though.

It would streamline the outside for a unique look and give you a greater field of vision. Dark window tint would no longer be a hinderence as well.

My only concern with the 1157 is the heat, which is why i didn't suggest it. Could work if done right though. The camera idea is simply badass however

What heat? It would only be on for a couple of blinks now and then. Not enough time to generate any real heat.

And yea. The LCD's would have a real "cool" factor to them as well.

I found this a while back on some online catalog. I typed in Camaro and a picture with that link popped up. And it was priced at something like $300 for the kit. I think they custom make it to your application but I never called to checked it out…
