Are the MSD coil packs any better than the factory LS1? Worth buying for L92 build? I know the factory coil packs are a good design, but are the MSD any better?

no. but the coils used on LS2, L76, L92, and LS7 motors are supposedly better than the ones used on our LS1's.
We have taken out 2 set of MSD coils out of builds done at my sponsor's shop. Went back to stock coil packs. No problems. We have used LS1 coils in a Mustang, Toyota MR2 and numerous other turbo builds. All with no problems.

Verdad Gallardo I have a set of perfectly fine LS1 coils and was just wondering since I'll be going with a radical L92 build in the future, if I should consider upgrading.

The MSD coils I have heard are used in FI applications. They help burn off extra fuel as they are multiple spark per singal.
I can't vouch if they will make your MPG go up or whatever because I went to an extremely cold plug at the same time for nitrous. I didn't loose any MPG though you think I would with a plug like that.
I was dumping fuel in on nitrous runs and the plugs looked great.

I won't be running FI or nitrous, it'll be a N/A motor, full out race. I was looking for an alternative if there was something better.

My guess is they put out more energy more like the costly MSD coils just not multiple spark. Plus, truck stuff is always designed and built to be tougher. More energy, better spark, better ignition.

if you swap, you'll need the coil pack harness because the coil connector is diffrent.
but its pointless.
the fact is, the stock coils are strong enough to light off a 6second boosted race car.
when you start reaching stupid levels of cyl pressure, (we're talking about, worried about lifting the heads level).... THEN you go into the PCM with your tuning software, and adjust the dwell settings for the coils.
thats it.
other then that... you dont have to worry about the ignition system on your motor... you have 8 fullsize coils, one for each cyl... its so ridiculously overkill that its almost funny.
dont worry about it, and spend your money elsewhere.
I know LSX motors are still being produced (SS Trailblazer, C6, etc.) Heck, most the motors GM puts out (performance V8) are based of LS series. I was just wondering from what model I should consider these coils.

otherwise, like i said, it really doesnt matter. you will see zero diff in ET, trapspeed, top speed, horsepower, or handling.
