When you push a 1/8" cable into that 1/8" jack, you actually flip the small mechanism inside to switch which which pair of wires is used.

BTW, I edited my previous post with more detail.

Great write up.

I tried this yesterday on my radio out of an 02 camaro and it seemed to work great but the only problem is that i can still hear my cd playing very low in the back ground. Here is what I did.

Pin 1 = ground
Pin 2 = left channel wire to main board
Pin 3 = left channel wire to cd player
Pin 4 = right channel wire to cd player
Pin 5 = right channel wire to main board

Does anyone else that has done this hear the cd playing in the back ground of thier iPod? Please let me know if I did something wrong. Also when I play my cd without the iPod plugged in the sound is very low. Cd player was working fine before.

One more thing I have an AUX for my 12 disc cd changer is there a way to tap into that instead?

Thanks for any help.

you may have a bad jack if you are getting bleed through and low cd player volume, or a bad connection somewhere, id suspect a bad jack

there is a module to use the 12disc jack on the back but its like 60dollars

Your wiring looks correct. It could be a bad jack ... the front of the case is clear so you can see the connections being made when a cable is plugged in. If you're able to bench test it you can try touching the mainboard left/right wires directly to the MP3 cable plug. The connections are kind of close together on the jack, make sure the solder or wires aren't bridging across two pins. What are you using as the ground?

Is that the voice of experience?
I changed the ground to the deck chassis and it works great. Also for what it is worth I made a plate to mount the jack in and used the bolt at the front of the ctr console to mount it on the passenger side, didn't need to drill a hole in any of the cars factory stuff at all

Basically it goes like this, judging from one of the set's of Pictures.
Stereo Jack side {-------------}RADIO Side:
Post 1<------------------------> Ground to Radio Chasis
Post 2<------------------------> Connect to Pin 1 on Circuit Board Side inside Radio
Post 3<------------------------> Connect to Harness Side Of Pin 1 inside Radio
Post 4<------------------------> Connect to Harness Side Of Pin 3 inside radio
Post 5<------------------------> Connect to Pin 3 on Circuit Board Side inside Radio
Maybe that will help. clear things up if there are any doubts. I'm soldering the connector tonight and will add it to the radio tomorrow

Ya, the pre-98 radios have a flat "printed" type cable. It's possible to work with it, but it's much more difficult than the ribbon cables with actual wires

Thanks Jason...I did this and it works great. If anyone is wondering where to put the Aux input, I put mine on my TCS control panel. Although I added a little something to make it look better.

Standard cat 5 is good ... it's cheap and easy to get in different lengths, just cut the ends off a cable. It has more than enough wires, 8 and you only need 5. Telephone wire tends to be pretty thin, and only 2-4 wires.

Yes, it will work with anything with a standard headphone jack.

So I don't need to have my cd changer plugged in for this to work or do I? My cd changer crapped out on me a long time ago.

Nope, it doesn't use the changer audio so it will work fine with or without one

I think you'll find that you need a changer connected for this to work. The reason has nothing to do with the audio but with the way the head unit won't respond to the CD/Aux button (CD/Play on Firebird) unless it detects a changer attached.

You don't need a changer for this to work.

It taps directly into the wiring for the internal CD player... WhiteBird00, you may be confusing this thread with the other one where someone was planning on tapping into a connector plugged into the cd changer jack - then you would need a changer for it to work.

You don't set it to aux, you leave it on standard CD player - the stereo thinks it's playing from the built-in CD player but the audio is actually being passed from the mp3 player (until you unplug it, then it works as normal)
