The Hooker Maxflow made the best power while still being very quiet at idle/2000rpm, but nice and loud at WOT. The Bassani Real Street also made nice power without being too loud. Anybody have any feedback on these mufflers?

suprising with no muffler or mufflers since it was i guess on a mustang it made the least amount of power...youd think just the opposite hmm.

I have a 3" madrel bent cat back w/ a Hooker Max Flow Center In/Out muffler on it, previously I had a "dynomouth" cat back - I couldn't stand it. I'm hoping to get to the track soon and do some back to back testing. the "dynomouth and off road pipes lost power vs. the all stock exhaust, it pulled more trap speed, but was impossible to launch w/o massive tirespin or bogging. The new system seems better by the butt dyno, however that's just Internet banter & I prefer to post real results. What I can say for sure, I like my car much better. I no longer get headaches from the drone going to and from work. I get all kinds of compliments about how much better it sounds now. Not to mention I can actually hear my girlfriend talking to me when we ride togehter in the car. (Haven't decided if that's a good thing or not - the jury is still out on that one)

My only guess would be that they were testing these mufflers on an engine that was on an engine dyno. They might have had and H or X pipe coming off the headers and then they had the mufflers put on right after the H or X. They might have also just put the mufflers directly on the headers? Either way with pretty much open headers I could see those kind of results.

If they were running an x-pipe and they took off the mufflers then they would definily pict up alot of hp and tq. I have done back to back testing on my car and I dynoed open headers and then open x-pip and the open X averaged 30 lbs tq more over the entire powerband. I then put on my spintechs and i lost about 8 lbs tq. and 9hp.

So I'd assume they probably did the muffler comparisons right off the headers.
The test was done in 5.0 Mustang Magazine December 2002 issue (page 55) if anyone happens to have a copy and can clear this question up.

It was a chassis dyno. . . those are RWHP numbers from a Notchback w/ heads/cam and bolt-ons.

I think they lost hp w/ no mufflers becuz they didn't mess w/ the fueling to accomodate the new flow.

On another note, the Borla XS is my favorite. . . it was their favorite in the article too, and that's what I'd go w/ on a custom cat-back.

Yes, very helpful. I used it when making my selection. Went with FlowTech Afterburners.

is the mustang a single muffler cat-back system or dual???

if it is single I wonder if the Borla XS single in/dual out would work good for the f-body and set it up to look like the Magnaflow???
or the magnaflow on the list- how does it compare to the magnaflow for the f-bodies?

any opinions on this??

I know this is an old thread but i'm looking to get some mufflers. What I was wondering was according to those figures, mainly the straight through designs are quieter than the chambered mufflers besides an open pipe. How is that? I figured that with the straight through design and more flow, the sound would be louder. Why is this not true?

Back from the dead... does anyone have the stock (non-ws6) and slp (ws6) exhaust decibels for comparison?
