While washing, waxing and detailing a Camaro or Firebird generally involves the same procedures that one would apply while washing, waxing and detailing any other pony car, there are a few tips, tricks and insider tidbits you'll want to know about. Let's start by going over the cleaning tips that are sure to keep your paint looking newer for longer. Then, we'll go over some of the best suggestions for achieving the perfect car wax. Next, we'll finish up by explaining the detailing tricks and common practices you can use to keep your Camaro or Firebird sparkling clean year-round!

Materials Needed

  • Car shampoo
  • Microfiber cloth
  • (2) buckets
  • Garden hose/water source
  • Rim cleaner
  • Clay bar (optional)
  • Car wax
  • High gloss tire spray

Step 1 – Rinse your car

The key to a good detailing job is to begin the process by rinsing all dirt, grime, product residue and other surface contaminants from your paint, wheels and tires, using either a wet microfiber cloth (soaked in water) and a large bucket or a pressure (or non-pressurized) hose. Once this is done, go ahead and apply a rim cleaner, as directed by the manufacturer. Once your rims are cleaned, you are now ready to apply a top-quality car wash, such as Meguiar's Gold Class.

Step 2 – Thoroughly wash your car

The key to a professional-level wash is to wash your car from the top down. Doing so will eliminate the transfer of dirt, grime and other road contaminants to the top sections of your car. Rinse and repeat as needed. It's highly recommended that you apply at least two passes of shampoo before moving on to Step 3. Dry your paint when you are done washing it.

Pro Tip

Eliminate swirls and scratches on your paint by slowly and properly cleaning it with a high-quality shampoo. You may also want to clay bar your paint to remove stubborn marks, as well as those invisible to the eye. Apply a lubricant when clay baring your Camaro or Firebird.

Step 3 –Wax your car

Using a microfiber applicator, apply the manufacturer recommended amount of Meguiar's Hi-Tech Yellow Wax to all areas of your paint. After the wax has been worked into your paint, remove it using a clean microfiber cloth. Continue until you have completely waxed your entire car. Apply at least two coats, if possible.

Step 4 – Spruce up your tires

You're on your way to completing the detailing process; however, first, you'll need to apply Meguiar's Hot Shine Spray to your tires. This high gloss tire spray will keep your tires looking blacker longer, as well as prevent physical damage to the rubber, such as cracking.

Step 5 – Clean your interior

Vacuum out your interior, wipe down your windows and all vinyl areas, and brush all fabric areas. Empty cup holders and storage areas of unwanted items and trash, and insert a car air vent clip for the freshest air possible.
