Camaro and Firebird Why is the Transmission Slipping Out of Gear?

Materials Needed

  • Jack and jack stands
  • Socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Transmission fluid

Step 1 – Check fluid's condition

It could be low or old.

Anytime there is a transmission issue, you should always check the transmission's fluid first. A healthy transmission fluid should be pink in color, so if yours is brown, then you need to replace it as soon as you can. Also, check for proper fluid level using your transmission dipstick. If your fluid is low, top it off, then check for any leaks just to be safe.

If your fluid appears proper, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2 – Replace your transmission's filter

It could be dirty or clogged.

The transmission filter is located inside the transmission's fluid pan. If your filter is clogged, it could cause your transmission to pop put of gear, as well as other symptoms. To replace the filter, raise your car and secure it on four jack stands. Be sure the car is leveled, then place your drain pan under the front of the transmission's pan. Remove the front bolts on the pan, then let it drain the fluid; you may need to pull it down with your hands to help it drain. Then remove the rear bolts to drop the pan. Replace the filter and use this opportunity to thoroughly clean your transmission pan. Install it back and torque the bolts to nine ft/lbs. Refill the transmission through the transmission's dipstick using a funnel.

If the filter is not the issue, proceed to Step 3.

Step 3 – Check the shift forks

It could be bent.

This is a difficult process, and it's highly recommended you let a professional do that. Shift forks are like "selectors" between the gears; for example, there is a 1-2 shift fork, a 3-4 shift fork, etc. Because a lot of force is put through the shifter, especially when banging gears, it is possible to bend or damage a shift fork. This will cause a misalignment of the shifter between gears, and your gears can slip out, and the transmission will pop out of gear. Most forum enthusiasts claim they replaced it with a steel fork, and it made a big difference, as they are harder to bend. To remove it, you will have to take the transmission apart, as well as remove the gears. Again, this job is better left for the professionals.
