Chevrolet Camaro 2010-2015: How to Change Rear Differential Fluid

Your rear differential oil in the Chevrolet Camaro should be changed annually. Learn how to do it below.

The Chevrolet Camaro is a rear wheel drive, which means it has a rear differential that you need to worry about. Depending on your driving style and how much you enjoy the Camaro's acceleration, the rear differential fluid has to be replaced biannually, or annually if you're a regular at the track. The process is a tight fit, but most DIYers can do it. If you don't remember the last time you've replaced your rear differential fluid, consider now to be the right time. Read on to learn how to get this process done in your Chevrolet Camaro.

Chevrolet Camaro 2010-2015 How to Change Rear Differential Fluid

Materials Needed

  • Jack and jack stands
  • Square head socket
  • Drain pan
  • Rear differential fluid
  • Fluid pump

Step 1 – Raise your car

Raise the rear end of your car using your jack, then secure it with jack stands.

Step 2 – Drain the rear differential

There are two bolts on the rear differential: one is the fill plug, and the other one is the drain plug. In cases where there are fill and drain plugs, always undo the fill plug first. If you loosen the drain plug, drain all the diff oil out and then can't remove the fill plug, you're hosed. The drain plug is located closer to the exhaust, so place the drain pan underneath it. Use your square head socket, preferably one with a swivel head to go around the exhaust, then turn it counter-clockwise to loosen it. Let the fluid drain completely.

Step 3 – Fill rear differential with fluid

Close the drain plug, then open the fill plug up. Use your multi-use pump to pump fluid into the rear differential. Keep pumping fluid into the fill hole until it over-flows. Close up the fill hole, and you are done. You will use approximately 1.4 quarts of fluid to fill the rear differential up.
